Warhol Exhibit Kicks off Artful Season in Fayetteville

Fayetteville NC – The David McCune International Art Gallery at Methodist University will host an iconic exhibit entitled “gallery goes POP: Warhol” from February 7 through April 12.  The iconic exhibit features Andy Warhol silkscreen print masterworks depicting Uncle Sam, Mickey Mouse, John Wayne, Annie Oakley, Ingrid Bergman and others.

Nicole Dezelon, Assistant Director of Learning at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh will speak at the opening night reception, which runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on February 7.

The exhibit is on loan from The Cochran Collection in Georgia and from the Ackland Art Museum on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In additional to Warhol, the Fayetteville area has plenty of other arts outlets to explore this spring. A few examples:

• The Marquis Slam, a spoken word poetry slam that features poets from around the United States is held at The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. This event, the largest poetry slam in North Carolina, happens the first Saturday of the month.

• The oldest continuously performing symphony in North Carolina, the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra, performs a concert titled “Love is in the Air” on February 9.   This love-themed program of passionate music, including selections from Prokofiev’s colorful and descriptive Romeo and Juliet, plus iconic music from Casablanca and West Side Story. This program also features world-renowned piano virtuoso Anton Nel, performing Rachmaninov’s impassioned Piano Concerto No. 2.  Later this spring, on April 14th two-hundred members of the Symphony perform Beethoven’s monumental 9th Symphony.

• Something is on stage throughout the spring, thanks to Cape Fear Regional Theatre and The Gilbert Theater, two award winning community semi-professional theaters.  Upcoming productions include:  Annie; Trumbo; The Cake; Doubt; Memphis; The Lion, The Witch and Wardrobe and The Laramie Project.

• Exhibits on tap this spring include “Picturing America’s Pastime,” which focuses on the history and sport of baseball tied with the story of Fayetteville’s new minor league team, the Fayetteville Woodpeckers;  and a national juried print exhibition with issues pertaining to contemporary social justice.  These exhibits open at  The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County and Ellington-White Gallery.

Since its opening in 2010, the McCune Gallery has been Fayetteville’s premier art venue, where works from traveling exhibitions, fine art on loan from museum collections throughout the world, and works by Methodist University students are displayed.
