Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota Welcomes New Board Member

Edward Alley’s extensive career in music includes managing the New York Philharmonic, serving as associate director of the Juilliard Opera Center, and serving as executive director of the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music. An esteemed conductor, Alley has conducted more than 800 operatic performances.

(Sarasota, Florida) John Fischer, executive director of the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota (ACS), announced today that Edward Alley has been welcomed as the newest member of the organization’s board of trustees.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome this immensely talented individual to our board,” says Mary Elizabeth Carey, ACS’s board chair. “Ed’s extensive expertise in running renowned music-based organizations will be a huge gain for us. We’re beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him.”

Edward Alley started his music career as a conductor. At the age of 22, he became conductor of the 7th U.S. Army Symphony. Later, he worked with the Goldovsky Opera Theater, and has conducted performances for the Lake George (N.Y.) Opera Festival, and the St. Paul (Minn.) Opera. In all, Alley has a total of more than 800 operatic performances under his direction. Alley also has extensive experience managing non-profit organizations. In his long career, he was manager of the New York Philharmonic and served as associate director of the Juilliard Opera Center. He also served as executive director of the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music, supervising the distribution of approximately $1 million annually in grants to performers and arts organizations. As the former director of the Exxon-Arts Endowment Conductors Program, Alley served as a vocal adjudicator for numerous national and international vocal competitions. He was also an onsite evaluator and member of the grants panel for the opera/musical theater and music programs of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Alley is a former trustee of the Sarasota Opera, former president of Gloria Musicae, and former chair of the TDC grant and policy panels of the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County. Most recently, he chaired the international search committee for Sarasota Orchestra, resulting in the engagement of Anu Tali as its artistic and music director. Alley is married to June LeBell, a music critic, author, radio host and noted lecturer on classical music and opera.
