This acclaimed Welsh folk play with music is directed by “one of the most powerful and influential women in Welsh theatre” (Wales Online),Rachael Boulton (director of Blackout at the Royal National Theatre in London) . The limited New York engagement, prior to its World Tour, will play the upstairs space at The Flea Theater, 41 White Street, New York, NY 10013. Inspired by true events, The Good Earthis the explosive new story of a Welsh village fighting to save their homes and mountain unravelled through physical theatre akin to the Welsh-trained Frantic Assembly, new writing and Welsh folk song, bringing to life a valley torn apart by their council, big business and eventually themselves.
Facing pressure from the local council to move when a new development is proposed, a small group of ardent Welsh villagers decide to fight back. This explosive new play provides cultural context to the anti-establishment sentiment of rural Wales that has partly led to the recent “Brexit” vote.
The piece was developed in residency in the Rhondda Valley, Wales, working with one of the few still standing ex-mining theatres of the 1800’s to tell the story of a family, who against all odds, fought for what they believed in.
The play is bilingual with all songs sung in Welsh. The songs were first recorded in New York in 1965 by Welsh language activist Dr. Meredydd Evans.
Featuring Rachael Boulton, Anni Dafydd, Kate Elis, Gwenllian Higginson (Forever Young – Young Vic Theatre, London; England’s Dreaming – Unicorn Theatre, London) and Michael Humphrey (War Horse – World Tour).
The production is musical directed by Max Mackintosh and features scenic/costume design by Buddug James Jones, lighting design by Katy Morrison, and graphic design and illustration by Tom Flannery. Jason Rost is the New York Associate Producer and Matt Davies is the general manager.

RACHAEL BOULTON (Director) born in Wales, Rachael trained as an actor and director at Joan Littlewood’s E15 Acting School, London. Upon graduating Rachael was nominated for Spotlight’s Best Actor and received a Royal Shakespeare Company training award. Rachael is a National Theatre Wales Emerging Director working on two of their five star productions including Crouch, Touch, Pause, Engage with Max Stafford-Clark. Rachael continues to work with National Theatre Wales, is resident director at the Park and Dare Theatre, and member of the JMK trust. She is Artistic Director and founder of Motherlode, directing the company’s first play, The Good Earth. Rachael is directing Blackoutat the Royal National Theatre in London this June and is also currently developing new work with companies like the Bristol Old Vic Theatre, Creu Cymru and in 2015 was listed as one of the most powerful and influential women in Welsh theatre.
MOTHERLODE THEATRE LTD. produces exciting work from Wales that speaks to worldwide audiences. Drawing from Eastern European theatre styles, Motherlode works intensively with an ensemble who, through vigorous physical theatre and voice training, create a visceral and unique performance style. Headed by director Rachael Boulton (Blackout Royal National Theatre London) with composer Max Mackintosh (winner of best production at Wales Theatre Awards) and actor Emma Vickery (Marriage of Figaro, English National Opera). Their work is created in the Rhondda Valley in South Wales, just next to the Bwlch Mountain. Resident at the Park and Dare Theatre, built in 1914, one of Wales’ still standing ex-mining halls, they invite exceptional artists to collaborate with them to tell relevant and rousing stories, rooted in Wales but knowing no bounds.
