USFSM Center for PAInT, PISAB to partner on anti-racism workshop series
SARASOTA, Fla. (June 28, 2019) – The Florida Center for Partnerships for Arts Integrated Teaching (PAInT) is partnering with the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (PISAB) to host a workshop series next month to promote anti-racism strategies.

The series, “Undoing Racism®: Transforming Community through the Arts,” is planned for July 12-13 at USF Sarasota-Manatee, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, and July 14 at New College of Florida, 5800 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota.

“This interactive workshop is extremely enlightening, intense at times, but empowering for community members to find ways to engage in transformative conversations to develop cultural competence and racial equality in schools and communities,” said Denise Davis-Cotton, EdD, director of the Center for PAInT at USF Sarasota-Manatee.

PISAB was founded in 1980 by community organizers Ronald Chisom of New Orleans, and Jim Dunn, PhD, of Yellow Springs, Ohio, to help empower communities to defeat racism. The organization has provided training, consultation and leadership development to more than a million people and organizations nationally and internationally. “Undoing Racism®” is the organization’s signature workshop.

Davis-Cotton said she hopes the sessions draw community leaders, business owners, educators and students, and that a plan emerges to move the community forward through cultural sharing and networking.

The sessions are scheduled:

  • Friday, July 12, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at USFSM’s Selby Auditorium
  • Saturday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at USFSM’s Selby Auditorium
  • Sunday, July 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Music Room, College Hall, New College of Florida

The workshop is $50. Visit to register and learn more.
