TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2016 (Philadelphia, PA) – Today, the legendary Roots crew announced their annual ROOTS PICNIC is returning to Philadelphia’s Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing on SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 2016 for their biggest and most diverse event yet. The acclaimed festival, now celebrating its ninth year, will feature an eclectic lineup with performances by: Usher (backed by The Roots), Future, The Roots, Leon Bridges, Blood Orange, Kehlani, Kaytranada, Swizz Beatz, DMX and more (full line up below).The Roots have enlisted Broad City’s Abbi and Ilana to Announce 2016 Roots Picnic Lineup. The Roots Picnic is an annual sold-out affair that kicks off the summer festival season. Last year’s bill featured the likes of The Weeknd and A$AP Rocky. In previous years, performers at The Roots Picnic have included: The Black Keys, John Legend, Janelle Monae, TV on the Radio, Nas, Vampire Weekend, Kid Cudi, Public Enemy, Gnarls Barkley, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Gary Clark Jr., James Murphy (DJ set), Rakim and many more.

About The Roots
Formed in 1987, in Philadelphia, PA, the legendary Roots Crew, consists of Black Thought (MC), Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson (drums), Kamal Gray (electronic keyboards), F. Knuckles (percussion), Captain Kirk Douglas (electronic guitar), Damon Bryson (sousaphone) and James Poyser (electronic keyboard). Having previously released thirteen albums, The Roots have become one of the best known and most respected hip-hop acts in the business, winning four GRAMMYs, including “Best R&B Album” for Wake Up!, “Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance” for “Hang in There” (with John Legend) and “Best Group or Duo R&B Vocal Performance” for “Shine.” The ensemble was most recently nominated for “Best Rap Album” for the 2011 release of their album undun, which brings their GRAMMY nomination count to twelve.  Black Thought and Questlove also recently received a 2016 GRAMMY nomination for “Best Musical Theater Album,” for the Hamilton cast recording.
