The second installment in the Canton Symphony Orchestra’s new free lecture series, ConverZations, will begin at noon on Columbus Day – Monday, October 13th. ConverZations are public discussions featuring a variety of musicians and music-lovers alike. The series takes place at noon on the second Monday of every month from September 2014 to May 2015 in the Zimmermann Symphony Center (The Z), 2331 17th St. NW, Canton.
Back in the early 1980s, the Canton Symphony and its new Music Director – Gerhardt Zimmermann – made a lasting impression on a young Stark Countian, and now years later they are impacting his son in a big way as well. Come enjoy a father and son’s personal and often humorous reflections on their cross-generational experiences with the CSO. Find out how our orchestra is like a box o’ chocolates, and how even a maestro has to go shopping sometimes, just like a regular person. Dad says “There’s quite a story behind that… but you’ll have to be at The Z on the 13th to hear it!”
Callum Amacher, currently an 8th-grader at Lake Middle School, has been blogging about the CSO for the last 3 seasons. You can read his musings, and a few of his dad’s, at www.Callumndad.com. Callum plays piano, trombone, and guitar, and has dabbled in composition (his 2012 piece for the 75th birthday of Philip Glass received encouragement from the composer himself). Callum was featured in About magazine’s 2013 Amazing Kids issue, and he has made a number of videos for the CSO including interviews with Music Director Gerhardt Zimmermann and composer Eric Benjamin.
Brett Amacher grew up attending Canton Symphony concerts, and even took a few conducting lessons with CSO Associate Conductor Peter Stafford Wilson while in junior high. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Bowling Green State University, where for 2 years he studied conducting at the graduate level with Robert Spano, the Grammy-winning Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Aspen Music Festival and School. Brett served as Correspondent/Classical Music Critic with The Repository in the 1990s, and later worked for The Cleveland Orchestra.
ConverZations attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch, and the orchestra provides a light dessert. For more information on upcoming ConverZations lectures and other events run by the Canton Symphony Orchestra, visit www.cantonsymphony.org/converzations.
