Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area to Attempt Learn to Ski and Snowboard Guinness World Record

Truckee, Calif. (Dec. 14, 2015) – The team at Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area aims to help set a Guinness Book of World Record on Jan. 8, 2016. As part of the National Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month (LSSM) initiative to gain new lifetime skiers and snowboarders, 160 resorts across the country, including Tahoe Donner, have teamed up in hopes of breaking a record for the largest, one-time ski and snowboard group lesson in the world.

“We want to do something dramatic to generate publicity for learning how to ski or snowboard and motivate newcomers to take a beginner ski or snowboard lesson,” explained Mary Jo Tarallo, executive director of LSSM. “This new, unique and highly visible approach will kick off Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month and augment Bring a Friend promotion.”

Headed by LLSM, Snow Operating and SnoCountry.com, at 10 a.m., 50 beginner skiers and 50 beginner snowboarders will have the chance to participate in this learn to ski and snowboard lesson at Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area. The current world’s largest ski lesson (multiple venue) world record is 594 participants. Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area will have a max of 100 ski and snowboard participants and a minimum of 25 represented in this challenge, along with two independent witnesses and two stewards. Participants in the world record challenge are exclusively for beginner students, new to the sport.

“We’re happy to be part of this challenge,” said Robert McClendon, Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area manager. “People of all ages who have never skied or snowboarded before will have a chance to learn with us—and in learning with us, we could go down in history. It will be a day we will always remember and we encourage the community to come out and cheer us on.”

Registration is $10 per person, available on a first-come, first-served basis and subject to sellout. Only the first 50 skiers and first 50 snowboarders to sign up online may participate. To be counted toward the Guinness World Record, participants and instructors must complete the one hour, 30 minute lesson. If a student or instructor drops out of the lesson prior to completion of the lesson, their participation will not be counted toward the record attempt. Photographers and videographers will be present at all times during the lesson, as required by Guinness. All media is invited to record and witness the record attempt.
