SunCoast Teams Up with Abbott to Inspire Nigerians to Donate Blood
SunCoast Blood Bank to donate bloodmobile to Nigeria
Sarasota, FL – Everyday, people around the world rely on safe blood for critical surgeries and long-term medical treatments. In countries in the African region such as Nigeria, more than 50% of the blood supply is still dependent on family members and paid blood donors. Systems based on blood donation by the family and friends of patients are rarely able to meet demands for blood, while paid “donation” poses serious threats to the health and safety of the recipients as well as the donors themselves. That’s why SunCoast Blood Bank is teaming up with global health company, Abbott, to launch BE THE 1™ Donor to inspire Nigerians to become voluntary blood donors. As part of a global effort, SunCoast has donated a bloodmobile slated for retirement to the National Blood Transfusion Service in Ibadan, Nigeria.
SunCoast Blood Bank, Abbott and Cristiano Ronaldo, together are promoting BE THE 1™ Donor. World –famous footballer, Ronaldo has been a supporter of blood donation and a regular donor since he was 24 years old. Ronaldo’s personal experience with his teammate has helped him to understand the importance of giving blood. Now he’s encouraging others to join the “BE THE 1™ Donor” movement.
The new wrap on the bloodmobile will feature Cristiano Ronaldo, the world highest paid athlete, and will be unveiled at the SunCoast Blood Bank Donor Center in Sarasota before it leaves on Thursday, February 11th, to begin its journey to Nigeria. A documentary team will follow the bloodmobile to Nigeria to tell its story.
The newly wrapped bloodmobile will be unveiled Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 11:30 am.
