“These guys aren’t afraid to innovate. Their success owes largely to the way they string different styles of live music together with electronic layering to create a sound that, in many regards, supersedes standard musical classification. Rock, jazz, techno, funk, hip-hop, they use it all. What’s really admirable is that although they use pieces of all these distinct styles, the music they produce stands in a category of its own. Listen closely and you might hear a familiar rhythmic bass line or chord progression, but take a step back and the music becomes shapeless and alien and awesome.”
-Nathan Diehl, Mother Plug Music (10/28/16)
To reach a 20th anniversary is a major accomplishment for any band–and in 2017, STS9 will officially hit that milestone. To mark the occasion, the acclaimed and adventurous electronic rock band has announced their celebrations will kick off with a three-night stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO September 8-10 featuring a slew of support acts including some of the band’s longtime friends.
STS9 will begin the festivities on Friday, September 8 by performing their highly regarded album Artifact live in its entirety for the first time ever since its 2005 release and they’ll wrap the weekend with an acoustic Axe The Cables set during their full show on Sunday, September 10. Supporting STS9 on this run will be Nightmares on Wax (DJ set), El Ten Eleven and Moon Boots (in the round) on September 8, Michal Menert, Sub-ID and Richard Devine (in the round) on September 9, and Troyboi, LTJ Bukem featuring Armanni Reign and Soul Clap (in the round) on September 10. The band’s annual run at Red Rocks will mark their 15th consecutive year at the famed Colorado venue and bring their overall tally there to 23 shows. Tickets go on sale Friday, April 21, with a limited pre-sale beginning on Wednesday, April 19.
“We are so excited and truly honored to play Red Rocks to kick off the celebration of STS9’s first 20 years,” shares the band. “Red Rocks is a very special place to us and one of the most incredible stages on the planet. Every year leading up to RRX we take stock of where we are musically and the path we want to blaze going forward. This year, we wanted to give thanks and share the stage with some of the artists who have inspired us along the way. Thank you for the love and support; we’ve become quite a big family over the years 🙂 Looking forward to the next 20!”
Due to massive fan demand, STS9 recently re-released the 20-song Artifact on vinyl for the first time as a special 2-LP set (packaged in the card and foil from the original release). The limited edition run of 800 sold out quickly upon its release in November 2016, but look for another batch to come out later this year.
The quintet–Hunter Brown (guitar/sequences), Jeffree Lerner (percussion), David Phipps (keyboards/synths), Zach Velmer (drums) and Alana Rocklin (bass)–is currently on the road on their spring “Get Loud Tour.” Named for the lead single off their latest full-length album THE UNIVERSE INSIDE, the band’s 23-date headlining outing heads across the country hitting Lake Tahoe, San Diego, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Boston, Dallas and Houston, among other cities, before wrapping in New Orleans with two shows (April 29-30) during the final weekend of JazzFest, one of which will be their acclaimed acoustic Axe The Cables show. As STS9 brings their expansive sound, innovative style combining the energy of 21st century dance music with the dynamics of a band, one-of-a-kind critically acclaimed production and message of unity to audiences, they’ll be joined by support acts Jaw Gems, City of the Sun and Modern Measure, rotating per show. STS9 released THE UNIVERSE INSIDE to critical praise September 2, 2016 via the band’s own 1320 Records, marking their first new full-length album in nearly seven years. The 13-track album–the band’s first featuring bassist Alana Rocklin-debuted at #1 on the iTunes and Amazon Electronic Albums Charts and #2 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums Chart, marking their highest position to date on that chart. Written, recorded, produced and mixed by the band at their own 1320 Mission Control in Santa Cruz, CA, THE UNIVERSE INSIDE continues the band’s stylistic exploration in the studio, with Ben Kaye from Consequence Of Sound saying, The Universe Inside sees the band return with a message…in all, the record marks a new dawn for the long-standing outfit” (8/26/16) and Jambands.coms John Patrick Gatta noting, “With the creation of The Universe Inside the quintet may have put out its most important album – artistically and conceptually. Among the spacey atmospherics and danceable rhythms are lyrics and recorded content that reminds us of our interconnectivity, particularly at a time when the world needs a message of unity not division” (12/19/16). Kyle Rutherford of The Untz also praised the album saying, “The Universe Inside is a conscious expression of the beauty in the world, and a motivation for all listeners to follow the path they wish to choose” (9/5/16) with Grateful Web‘s Elliot Engebretson describing it as “a melodical masterpiece with a message, one that speaks of space, time and this cosmic universe we are all a part of” (10/20/16).
