The activities for the world’s oldest known manatee’s birthday have officially begun. Snooty is an extra special manatee who sets records every day for how long we know manatees can live. So to celebrate his record-breaking 66 years, South Florida Museum is throwing him an extra special Birthday Bash on Saturday, July 19, 2014 from 10 am until 2 pm. The celebration will be full of fun activities for the young and young at heart! Family-friendly games and activities, entertainment, wildlife awareness opportunities and food vendors will be available throughout the event. Free cookies and drinks will be available for children (while supplies last). Kids entering preschool through sixth grade can get involved now by submitting a birthday card to Snooty’s Annual Birthday Card Contest! (Entry forms for the card contest are available online at SouthFloridaMuseum.org or can be picked up at the Museum – 201 10th Street W, Bradenton, FL 34205.)

“We’re so happy to be celebrating another year with our beloved Snooty. He is both a cherished member of this community and an icon for manatees and other endangered species around the globe. We’re not only happy to be able to share Snooty with our visitors and fans, but honored to have such a special animal at the South Florida Museum. Snooty’s 66th Birthday Bash is a time to celebrate the life of this record-breaking animal, but also to celebrate the lives and stories of those who have personally been touched by Snooty,” says South Florida Museum CEO Brynne Anne Besio. “From everyone at the Museum, we would like to give special thanks to all of our supporters and donors who help to provide for the care of Snooty as well as the rehabilitation manatees. It was heart-warming to see the outpouring of affection Snooty received last year for his 65th Birthday – not only from local residents, but from people all around the world.  Now another year older, we hope Snooty gets just as much – if not more – love and attention this year. We hope to see you all at Snooty’s 66th Birthday Bash!”

Admission to the outdoor Birthday Bash in the Spanish Plaza and on 10th Street will be FREE, while General  Admission to the Museum’s indoor Galleries, Aquarium, and Planetarium is half priced for the day! All attendees to the Festival will have the opportunity to say hello to Snooty in the Spanish Plaza’s underwater view of the manatee pool – and sing him “Happy Birthday” at noon as he is presented with his very special “cake” made of fresh fruits and veggies. The winners of Snooty’s Annual Birthday Card Contest will be presented with their prizes immediately following the “Birthday Song.“ For more information about the Festival, visit us online at SouthFloridaMuseum.org or call 941-746-4131, ext. 0.
