Set for Peace: Sting to headline the Peace One Day global celebration for Peace Day.

Stars come together at Shakespeares Globe on Peace Day, Saturday 21 September 2019

Composer, singer-songwriter, actor, author and activist Sting will headline celebrations for Peace One Day’s 20th anniversary at Shakespeare’s Globe on London’s Bankside this September. This year Sting was recognised by the BMI Pop Awards for his enduring hit single “Every Breath You Take” as the Most Performed Song on radio, and he will close the concert with a special performance for Peace Day.

The not-for-profit organisation, led by founder Jeremy Gilley began in 1999, with his vision of creating a day of ceasefire and non-violence with a fixed calendar date Peace Day.

The UN made this vision a reality in 2001 by unanimously declaring the 21st September as the International Day of Peace. By last year over a billion people were aware of the day and ceasefires have been brokered in some of the most violent regions of the world.

Twenty years after it was launched, Sting will join a host of stars to look back at Peace One Days achievements. The day-long celebration will comprise panel discussions and readings, culminating in a one-off concert on the Globe stage to honour those who have inspired people around the world to observe the day through peaceful activities and actions.

Sting said: “It is a pleasure to perform in celebration of Peace One Day’s efforts to bring the world together on this day of unity. Having travelled the globe through my career, I’ve seen first-hand how music can unite communities.”

Joining Gilley at the Globe will be Peace One Day Ambassadors, actors Jude Law, Sir Mark Rylance and Juliet Rylance, musicians Jack Savoretti, Emeli Sande and Will Young, and key peace advocates including Ahmad Fawzi the United Nations Strategic Communication Expert, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC Commonwealth Secretary- General, Dr Scilla Elworthy founder of the Oxford Research Group and Peace Direct, Pastor Dr James Wuye and Imam Dr Muhammad Ashafa.

Jeremy Gilley said today, It is incredibly moving to celebrating our Peace One Day 20 year with the support of Sting. Peace One Days mission has been to establish a Peace Day with a fixed calendar date, prove it could reduce violence in areas of conflict, homes, workplaces, local communities and now our goal is to institutionalise this day with 3 billion people being aware by 2025. Its inspiring to have the key supporters coming back together for this show from the 20 years of work”.

Michelle Terry, Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, said:
“Neuer was a Warre did cease
(Ere bloodie hands were wash’d) with such a Peace.”
Cymbeline

“These are the last words of Shakespeare’s first folio; every word he ever wrote is hurtling towards peace. When the world feels upside down and to have seemingly lost its way, peace seems like the only direction of travel. We could not be more proud to welcome home Peace One Day, welcome back Sting who first played at The Globe in 1999, and welcome for the first time to an amazing line-up of artists marking this important day.”

Tickets are now on sale.

About Peace One Day

Jeremy Gilley founded Peace One Day in 1999 to establish an annual Peace Day with a fixed calendar date and document the process.  In 2001 Peace One Day’s efforts were rewarded when the member states of the United Nations unanimously adopted the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non- violence on 21 September – Peace Day. Peace One Day’s overarching objective is to ensure that people are aware of the day and actively take part in peaceful activities.

Reports supported by McKinsey & Co. would indicate that over a billion people are now aware of the day, with an estimated 16 million people behaving more peacefully on the day as a result.

As well as leading a number of high profile Peace Day campaigns in sport, education, the environment, and within the corporate sector, Peace One Day has produced 14 major broadcast celebrations, including performances by Sir Elton John, Akon, Annie Lennox, Lenny Kravitz, Youssou N’Dour, Yusuf Islam, Peter Gabriel, Patti Smith, Bryan Adams, John Legend, Dave Stewart, Jimmy Cliff and many others.

2019 sees the launch of Peace One Day’s new campaign Cyber Non-violence, seeking to decrease online hate speech, racism, bullying and ridicule, and hoping to see an increase in peaceful communication online.

Performance and education take place throughout the year inspired and informed by The Globe Theatre and Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. In addition, there are theatre tours, as well as retail, catering and events spaces. A registered charity (No. 266916), the Shakespeare Globe Trust does not receive regular public subsidy. Three quarters of income comes from over one million visitors annually who buy tickets to performances, events, exhibition and tours, and educational activities. Revenue is also generated by on-site retail and catering. Vital support comes from the Globe’s family of Friends and Patrons. These include a range of Members’ schemes at varying levels, corporate supporters, trusts, individual gifts and legacies.

OUR CAUSE
We celebrate Shakespeare’s transformative impact on the world by conducting a radical theatrical experiment. Inspired and informed by the unique historic playing conditions of two beautiful iconic theatres, our diverse programme of work harnesses the power of performance, cultivates intellectual curiosity and excites learning to make Shakespeare accessible for all.

GLOBE THEATRE
Following an absence of 400 years, the present Globe Theatre stands a few hundred metres from the original site. The rebuilding of the iconic building was led by the pioneering actor and director Sam Wanamaker who spent 23 years fundraising, advancing research into the appearance of the original Globe and planning the reconstruction with architect Theo Crosby. Sam Wanamaker died in 1993, three and a half years before the theatre was completed.

Performances, tours, and educational work take place all year with the theatre season running from April to October. The theatre is an important space for research led by in-house scholars and is central to undergraduate and post graduate programmes, as well as activities for school students of all ages. Each year in early spring, Playing Shakespeare with Deutsche Bank, a Shakespeare production created for young people and families, gives 20,000 free tickets to state secondary schools in London and Birmingham.

SAM WANAMAKER PLAYHOUSE
The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, opened in January 2014. The intimate, 345-seat candle-lit space is a beautiful archetype of the indoor playhouses of Jacobean London. Also open all year, the Playhouse’s principal theatre season runs from October to April. In addition, it hosts panel discussions, lectures, and musical events. It is also an essential space for original research, rehearsed readings, family storytelling and workshops for school students and teachers.

BANKSIDE AND BEYOND
Overlooking the river on Bankside, Shakespeare’s Globe is proud to be in Southwark and has a range of community projects: Globe Elders Company, Southwark Youth Theatre, A Concert for Winter, Our Theatre schools performance project and a work experience programme for 14-18-year olds. Shakespeare’s Globe has a rich tradition of touring nationally and internationally with award-winning productions transferring to both the West End and Broadway. Globe on Screen also takes highlights from the theatre season to cinemas worldwide and Globe Player makes Shakespeare’s Globe productions available to all.
