Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation Winter Grants cycle recipients receive more than $680,000 in total

February 22, 2016 (Sarasota, FL.)— The Healthcare Foundation has approved recent grants totaling more than $680,000 for this grants cycle to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, in three different departments, and two other local healthcare centric charities.

The Foundation’s mission is to “Envision tomorrow’s healthcare today ™. It focuses largely on improvements in the areas of research, education, technology, and facilities. This cycle grants were given specifically to the SMH Nursing and Rehab Center, to SMH Tower, SMH Laboratory Services, Cardiovascular Center of Sarasota, and First Step of Sarasota.

The largest grant in the amount of $475,000 adds significant increased patient volume by the repurposing of current space to create more private rooms for patients in the 7th, 8th, and 9th floor of the East Tower.

The grant for $87,080 for SMH Nursing helps its resident’s quality of life through a beatification and safety of its external courtyard. On average 40% of the on average 700 plus people who come to the facility each year are wheelchair-dependent which makes this area and the need for easy accessibility and safety all the more important for the quality of life of patients who require assistance within their daily life both inside the facility and out.

The Lab Services department received a $75,100 grant to purchase two Bio Fire Film Array modules which help the lab to be able to process results in house and save time and dollars while doing so which improves the patients experience. This module the average turn around results time goes from 7 or 8 hours to 1 hour.

First Step of Sarasota, who provides addiction recovery programs within Sarasota County, also received a $20,000 grant to help them update their facility, specifically by replacing 40 year old windows with newer safer glass windows for the patients.

The Cardiovascular Center of Sarasota received a $25,000 grant for its 12th Annual Cardiovascular Symposium that brings the best and brightest Cardiologists in the world together to share information and discuss cutting edge research that will then be implemented into cardiac care here in Sarasota. The Foundation has been a supporter of this symposium program for over a decade and has given a total of well over $6 million in the area of general educational opportunities since its inception in 1976.
