Rescued Island Dogs From Puerto Rico En Route to Englewood, FL Tonight!

Englewood, FL, July 15, 2020 – Suncoast Humane Society is preparing for the arrival of around 4 dozen rescued dogs from Puerto Rico. Dogs who’ve been living in unimaginable conditions on the island will soon come to Suncoast Humane Society in Englewood, Florida in hopes of finding loving forever homes.

This rescue effort was arranged with the help of Island Dog Rescue, a nonprofit organization that saves dogs from the Caribbean Islands. There are currently an estimated 500 million stray dogs roaming the streets of an island the size of Connecticut. Many shelters on the island simply do not have the space for them all, resulting in high euthanasia rates.

Rescued island dogs are being flown to Miami tonight. They will then be picked up by Suncoast Humane Society’s staff to make their way to the shelter in Englewood.

“We have all seen how devastated Puerto Rico has been by natural disasters. The effects continue to this day,” said Maureen O’Nell, CEO of Suncoast Humane Society.

“It can feel overwhelming to know the animals are suffering as well, but there is so little coverage of their plight. Today Suncoast Humane Society is excited and honored to be able to step forward and help those with no voice,” said O’Nell.

This rescue mission requires specialized care beyond a typical inter-agency animal transfer; medical protocols will be followed to help keep our community’s pets and people safe. Many dogs will already be spayed/neutered and ready to be adopted or fostered. Others will require specialized attention. All of them deserve a safe, forever home.

If you are able and willing to open your home and heart to a rescued island dog or two, please visit www.humane.org to complete an adoption or foster application or to donate to their care.
