RANGERS RECALL RHP PHIL KLEIN, OPTION RHP ANTHONY BASS TO ROUND ROCK

RHP Ross Ohlendorf designated for assignment

Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Phil Klein from Triple-A Round Rock and optioned right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass to Round Rock.  Additionally, the club has designated right-handed pitcher Ross Ohlendorf for assignment.

Klein will be available in the bullpen for tonight’s series opener against the Yankees.  He has gone 1-0 with an 8.25 ERA (11 ER/12.0 IP) in 8 games/2 starts over 2 stints with Texas this season: Opening Day-April 14 and May 20-27.  His last outing with Texas came in a start on May 25 at Cleveland.  He has spent the balance of the season at Round Rock, going 1-0 with a 0.91 ERA (3 ER/29.2 IP) in 12 games/4 starts.  Triple-A opponents have batted .139 (14-101) with 14 walks and 25 strikeouts.  His last outing with the Express was a start on July 17 at Oklahoma City (ND, 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 58 pitches/37 strikes).

Bass has been in the Texas bullpen all season, posting no record with a 4.35 ERA (25 ER/51.2 IP) in 26 relief appearances.  His 51.2 relief innings rank 2nd in the American League and tied for 3rd in MLB, and he leads the majors with 6 relief outings of at least 3.2 innings.  Bass pitched in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday in Anaheim.

Ohlendorf had a 1-0 record with one save and a 3.52 ERA (3 ER/7.2 IP) in 8 games during his lone stint with Texas from May 17-June 3.  He was placed on the disabled list on June 7, retroactive to June 4, with a right groin strain.  He went 1-2 with a 3.07 ERA (5 ER/14.2 IP) over 10 relief appearances with Round Rock on an injury rehabilitation assignment that ended with his last appearance on Friday vs. Oklahoma City.  The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Ohlendorf to the minor leagues.

With these transactions, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club’s major league roster.
