RANGERS ACTIVATE OF WILL VENABLE;
PLACE OF JOSH HAMILTON ON 15-DAY DISABLED LIST
Detroit, Mich. – The Texas Rangers announced prior to tonight’s series opener in Detroit that the club has activated outfielder Will Venable (#30) on the 25-man roster. To make room on the active roster for Venable, the club has placed outfielder Josh Hamilton on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 16) with left knee inflammation.
Venable, 32, was acquired from the San Diego Padres in exchange for OF/C Marcus Greene and a player to be named later or cash considerations on Thursday. He joined the team in Detroit today. The left-handed batter and thrower has a .258 average with 6 home runs and 30 RBI in 98 games for San Diego this season, playing primarily against right-handed pitching. He has made 68 total starts, with 56 starts in center, 8 in left field, and 4 in right field. Venable owns a .345 (19-55) batting average with runners in scoring position this season.
Hamilton has batted .254 with 7 doubles, 6 home runs, and 21 RBI in 38 games with the Rangers this season. He has played in 2 of the last 8 games due to the knee injury and last played on Saturday vs. Tampa Bay in Arlington. The first date Hamilton would be eligible to return is August 31. This is Hamilton’s third stint on the disabled list this season (Opening Day-May 25 for right shoulder surgery rehab and June 1-30 with a left hamstring strain).
The Rangers have a full 40-man roster.
