New York Opera Alliance presents the inaugural New York Opera Fest, May-June 2016

With performances in NYC venues ranging from bars to playgrounds to traditional theaters, the festival will showcase the depth and diversity of the NYC opera scene
MARCH 2, 2016 – NEW YORK, NY – The New York Opera Alliance (NYOA), a consortium of New York opera companies and producers, is proud to present the inaugural New York Opera Fest ( May-June, 2016, with over 20 New York City-based companies putting on events in venues ranging from bars to playgrounds to traditional theaters. In addition to performances, the festival will showcase behind-the-scenes events where the public can attend open rehearsals, forums, showcases, and masterclasses featuring some of opera’s brightest emerging talents.

Performances will include:

  • On Site Opera presents the North American premiere of Marcos Portugal’s The Marriage of Figaro in the stunning townhouse, 632 on Hudson
  • Opera on Tap takes a break from the bars to help Harlem’s PS 129 students present an opera on their school playground
  • Bronx Opera presents an English-language production of Rossini’s beloved Cinderella at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theatre
  • Rhymes with Opera premieres composer Ruby Fulton and librettist Baynard Woods Adam’s Run, a dark comedy set in a dystopic future world
  • operamission performs Handel’s first Italian opera Rinaldo on period instruments
  • Hunter Opera Theater offers an evening of ‘Pocket Operas’ –short, newly–composed chamber works

The New York Opera Alliance works in partnership with OPERA America, the national service organization for opera and the nation’s leading advocate for American opera, based in New York City. As part of New York Opera Fest, OPERA America will present the New York Producers Symposium on May 21 and 22, a two-day workshop for opera and arts decision-makers.

With the New York Opera Fest, the Alliance will show that opera is not just a great catalogue of works, but a living, breathing community of people who produce new work, develop new artists, and engage with youth and the community. The festival is a chance for New Yorkers to discover the variety and creativity of our local opera companies.

The New York Opera Alliance ( is a consortium of New York opera companies and producers established to enhance and support the visibility and viability of opera organizations, and to ensure that New Yorkers are better informed about the breadth, depth and vitality of New York City’s opera-producing community. NYOA aspires to increase awareness of participating organizations, share ideas and resources, and facilitate collaborative projects. Founded in 2011, NYOA has grown from four organizations to 37 strong. Since 2013, NYOA has been fiscally sponsored by OPERA America.

OPERA America ( leads and serves the entire opera community, supporting the creation, presentation and enjoyment of opera. Artistic services help opera companies and creative and performing artists to improve the quality of productions and increase the creation and presentation of North American works. Information, technical and administrative services to opera companies reflect the need for strengthened leadership among staff, trustees and volunteers. Education, audience development and community services are designed to enhance all forms of opera appreciation. OPERA America provides organizational and project support to NYOA, through convenings, facilitated discussion, professional development leadership and access to OPERA America member resources.
