(Sarasota-Manatee, Florida) Lifelong Learning Academy announces its spring semester of Einsteins Circle forums, held on Wednesdays in March and April, 2:30-4 p.m., in Selby Auditorium at the University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Attendance is free. No reservations required. Iran and the USA (March 5) is moderated by Jim Aaron, an adjunct professor in computer science at Fairleigh Dickinson University and former manager of the air traffic control system for a high-tech company in the Middle East and North Africa.

 

Conflicting Worlds: The Biology of Gender Identity and Sexual Preference (March 12) is moderated by Alan Grindal, M.D., a private practitioner in neurology and a consultant at the Memory Disorder Clinic at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He is also a clinical assistant professor at Florida State University and was chosen by his peers as one of the Best Doctors in America.

 

Whats Changed With Climate Change (March 19), an update on global environmental politics, is moderated by Frank Alcock, associate professor at New College of Florida and a Senior Fellow at the Collins Center for Public Policy. He is also the director of the Mote Marine Policy Institute and a Belfer Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

 

Woman Swimming Upstream: Obstruction, Motivation, Success (March 26) is moderated by Linda De Mello, USF-LLA liaison and a member of the International Womens Forum. De Mello will be joined by Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino, Gay Thompson, president and CEO of Cement Industries, Inc. and a third panelist to be announced.  They will discuss women in non-traditional positions of leadership.

 

East Meets West: Medicine for the 21st Century (April 2) is moderated by Dr. Robin Shapiro, author, teacher and founder of the Be Well America School of Asian Studies, where she developed a holistic masters degree program. She has been a keynote speaker at American Cancer Society, Harvard and Princeton University events.

 

Take Another Toke And Call Me In The Morning (April 9)continues theongoing debate over the legalization of marijuana and is moderated by Jessica Spencer, project director for the Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition, a Florida-certified prevention and addiction professional and a liaison and case manager for respondents to the Marchman and Dependency Court acts.

 

Evolution In and Out Of Textbooks (April 16) is moderated by Joe Kerata, a former instructor of advanced biology in northeast Ohio. He has traveled to Kenya, Peru, Costa Rica, and the Galapagos Islands to further his studies in biology. Kerata is the recipient of Ohio Teacher of the Year Award and is a Princeton University Woodrow Wilson Fellow in Bioethics.

 

So You Want To Live To Be A Hundred! (April 23) is moderated by Al Tripodi, M.D., medical director of Senior Friendship Centers of Sarasota and a former extended care facilities director in upstate New York. He is certified in internal medicine and geriatrics and is a former clinical professor of medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Lifelong Learning Academy offers four course terms per year on the USFSM campus, at 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The spring 2014 term is March 10- May 1; registration is open through March 13th. Courses last six to eight weeks, meeting weekly and short series are available for one to four sessions, meeting weekly.
