French Illusions: Travel, Life And Love In The Loire Valley
Phoenix, AZ, May 18, 2015 – In a coming-of-age story, young, optimistic Linda Kovic learns the consequences of poor judgement after making a fateful decision in 1979. Based on her diaries, French Illusions: My Story as an American Au Pair in the Loire Valley (Dreamland Press, LLC) is a lively and touching memoir from Linda Kovic-Skow.
At twenty-one, Linda needs to learn a language fast in order to fulfill her dream of becoming a flight attendant. She chooses French immersion and contracts to become a nanny for a wealthy family in the Loire Valley. Yielding to poor judgment, she lies on her application and claims to speak basic French, confident she’ll be forgiven once she arrives at the Château de Montclair.
At the imposing family estate, she finds Madame Dubois aristocratic and impossible to please; the two children are incomprehensible. Willing to make it work any way she can, Linda is treated as a household drudge and assigned a cold room on the third floor to catch what sleep she can.
In the midst of daily struggles over culture and class, the last thing she needs is more complications. But when Linda attends language classes at the local university, she encounters a handsome young student. Passion for the man and for France makes her internal battle for independence much more difficult, and her coping skills are tested to their limits.
French Illusions: My Story as an American Au Pair in the Loire Valley won the Bronze Medal in the Non-Fiction Travel Category in the 2014 Readers’ Favorite Book Awards Contest. The sequel is coming in April. French Illusions: From Tours to Paris completes the story.
Best-selling author Linda Kovic-Skow spends her winters in Gilbert, Arizona and summers on a boat in the Pacific Northwest waters of Washington and British Columbia.
