LACOSTE FALL/WINTER 2016 PREVIEW

By Diane DiResta

The LaCoste Fall/ Winter 2016 Preview was held the week of March 9th at their showroom at 551 Madison Avenue in New York City. The collection included:

FW16 Runway, Sportswear, Sport, Kids, Leather Goods, L!VE and FW16 Footwear: LACOSTE Footwear FW16

It’s back to the future for Fall/Winter 2016 with the Retro Future style created for the French ski team in the 1960’s featuring high tech modernity with Anatomical reinforcement straps and LACOSTE’s very own original Seventies advertising messages such as “100% CROCO”, “CROCODILE” and “CROCODELLE” take over sweaters.

Eighties video game-inspired embroideries of pixelated pine trees and skiers playfully run down the length of a poncho dress as well as a tracksuit.

Creative Director Felipe Oliveira Baptista reinvents the LACOSTE style.

AMBIANCE. There is a “chalet” vibe – velvet jersey leggings and floor-length tracksuit skirts are worn with masculine derbies. Cult French movie “Belle de Jour” is referenced through an ultra-feminine PVC polo and flared skirt ensemble that is paired with high leather boots with wooden heels.

PALETTE. The neutral tones of steel, earth, and wood are met with shades of pink, red, mustard yellow and burnt orange.

FABRICS. Fabrics and their combination clash and inspire, as seen with the loud vinyl patches found on the back of a sheepskin coat, while the luster of velvet and nylon offsets the rusticity of felted virgin wool.

Felipe Oliveira Baptista, season after season, creates functional, comfortable and modular garments using a deconstruction/construction pattern.

FUNCTIONALITY. Garments are put-on and taken-off quickly, like a quilted velvet tracksuit skirt with elastic waistband. Accessories are hybrid or integrated. Mittens disappear into a jacket’s sleeves and scarves harbor hoods within their folds.

COMFORT. Jackets and coats are quilted, just like a duvet cover under which you could crawl; skirts are tents to be zipped and unzipped at will.

MODULARITY. Pieces can be worn in two or three different ways. Zips placed at a 90º angle give puffer jackets and sheepskin coats leeway for theatrical fastening or the option of being split in two.

A STYLE: CARE-FREE ELEGANCE

Felipe Oliveira Baptista’s ebb and flow, carrying LACOSTE’s sports-fueled DNA to the street and back again, is ceaseless.  It’s the ski theme that infuses the entire wardrobe with warmth and comfort, leaving the collection reminiscent of non-conformist chic.
