ELC AWARDED $1500 GRANT FROM KATHLEEN K. CATLIN FOUNDATION FOR WAVE FITNESS PROGRAM
Palmetto, Florida, June 27th, 2018 The Early Learning Coalition of Manatee County (ELC) has been awarded a $1500 grant from the Kathleen K. Catlin Foundation (c/o Community Foundation of Sarasota County) to support the WAVE fitness program.
At a recent Florida Winefest & Auction Grants Award ceremony – at which ELC received a $4000 grant to help fund WAVE – a supporter of Winefest was so impressed by WAVE and what it does for local children, that they donated a further $1500 in funding through the Kathleen K. Catlin Foundation.
Sharon Oakes, ELC Chief Operations Officer, said: “We are thrilled that our program has received this additional funding after it was highlighted at the recent Florida Winefest Grants Award ceremony. We would like to express our gratitude to the Kathleen K. Catlin Foundation for this financial support of what is a crucial program, as we try to combat the issue of child obesity in our local communities.”
The WAVE program is a prevention-driven, health and wellness program designed to support preschool children in achieving goals for improving long-term health and wellness. WAVE applies the principles of elite sports performance training to improve gross motor skills, flexibility, balance, coordination and strength while encouraging a lifestyle of consistent physical activity and healthy choices.
Preschools receive a block of functional fitness programming for their students twice per week. The 30-45-minute block of training consists of five minutes of dynamic warm-up followed by a rotation through several stations. The stations emphasize one of the five functional fitness areas: flexibility/mobility, strength, speed, agility, and endurance. Additionally, the program includes key components of the 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go & activities that promote healthy eating and nutritional awareness.
