Dayton, Ohio—The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored three runs in the second inning and overcame a two-home run performance by Dayton’s Brian O’Grady to defeat the Dragons 5-3 in a game shortened by rain to six innings on Friday night. A crowd of 8,309 attended the game at Fifth Third Field.

With the Dragons trailing 3-0, O’Grady drilled a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the second inning. After Wisconsin added two unearned runs in the top of the sixth, O’Grady followed a walk to Avain Rachal with his second homer of the night and fourth of the season to make it 5-3.

The game was stopped before the Dragons took the field in the top of the seventh inning and never resumed due to rain.

Dragons starting pitcher Tejay Antone (3-6) worked six innings and pitched well but deserved a better fate as he was victimized by several defensive miscues behind him. He surrendered nine hits and five runs (two earned) with one walk and four strikeouts. He was charged with the loss and credited with a complete game. Four of the nine hits against Antone were ground balls that could have been fielded by a Dragons infielder, and two additional Dayton errors led to three unearned runs.

The Dragons finished with only three hits including the two home runs by O’Grady. The other hit was a fifth inning single by the newest Dragon, second baseman Shed Long, in his first game with the club.

The Dragons began the day four games out of the wildcard spot with 10 games to play in the first half season. Bowling Green, leading the wildcard race, hosted Beloit in a late game in Kentucky.

The Dragons (31-29) open a new three-game series with the Beloit Snappers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Seth Varner (5-4, 3.51) will start for the Dragons against Beloit’s Brett Graves (6-0, 4.14). The game will be televised on WHIO digital channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372).

All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.

Notes: Dragons third baseman Gavin LaValley missed the game with a slightly strained hamstring.
