THE PLAYERS CENTRE ANNOUNCES 2016 NEW PLAY FESTIVAL WINNER

Sarasota, July 8, 2016 – Coordinator of the Players New Play Festival, Sandra Musicante and Artistic Director of The Players Centre for Performing Arts Jeffery Kin, are proud to announce this year’s winner of the 2016 Players New Play Festival. Over the week of June 27 to July 1, five local playwrights had the opportunity to see and hear their work on stage with a brief talk back, to give the playwrights additional input.

This year’s winner (drum roll please) is Connie Schindewolf with her play “Mammoth Bones.” The play centers on Robert, who is suffering from anxiety and depression. He starts hearing the sounds of ancient mammoths after unearthing a strange bone in his back yard.

The reading was directed by Debbie McCleod and featured Alyssa Goudy as the Reader, Mark Shoemaker as Robert, Donna DeFant as Vicky, Dianne Brin as Alice, Rod Rawlings as Dr. Collins and Joshua Brin as Dr. Z.

Artistic Director, Jeffery Kin remarks,“Sandra Musicante, my co-coordinator, and I couldn’t be more proud of the work done this past week–really great reads of all five chosen plays. Connie Schindewolf’s play ‘Mammoth Bones’ rose to the top as the winner, as the judges felt that it had the strongest message. It is a cleanly-written and well-thought-out drama that has heart and humor. All of the finalists were winners in our eyes, but we are pleased to announce ‘Mammoth Bones’ as this season’s winner. Look for it next August!”

Mammoth Bones will be fully produced next August in the Backstage Studio of The Players Centre. The 2015 winner of the New Play Festival, “Why Can’t I Be You” by Llywelyn Jones runs from August 23 to 28. A rock star wakes up after a night of partying to find his worst nightmare: his stalker in his bedroom. This intruder has only one demand: “Why can’t I be you?”

Come support these new, never-performed shows and see history in the making!
