A Film Inspired by the Fragrances

That Inspired a Film That Inspired the New Fragrances from Robert Graham


When Creative Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish) tapped David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer; Role Models) and Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer; Hello, My Name is Doris) to create a film about fragrances that pushed beyond the limits of men’s fragrances, that in turn inspired a film about mankind pushing beyond the limits that mankind has already pushed beyond – enter, the SECOND SOUND BARRIER.


Enthralled by the humorous, over-the-top drama found in 1970’s genre car-action movies, Wain and Showalter created a mashup of, adventure, romance and suspense to fuel the most exciting, dangerous and pulse-pounding trailer.


Bored with feature-length narrative, Wain and Showalter extracted the essence of a feature film and blended those moments to create the ultimate film trailer – packing the SECOND SOUND BARRIER full of their signature absurdist moments. “Why make a full-length feature film when you can blend and capture the essence of a film in 3 ½ minutes?” remarks Michael Showalter.


The resulting trailer is the tale of the three fastest drivers in the world and their quest to save Lady Billionaire. Struck with a mysterious illness, the only way to save her is to break the “second sound barrier”.

Only a brand like Robert Graham – bold, irreverent and audacious in attitude would take a completely unique approach to launching its new Blended Essence collection by partnering with David Wain and Michael Showalter. The three men’s fragrances were inspired by the essence of uncommon men and the rare craftsmanship of blended spirits.


Never conforming to the norm, Robert Stock (Founder Robert Graham) envisioned a bold creative approach – using humor infused with adrenaline, layered with speed and seduction as the ultimate storytelling vehicle for his first foray into the world of men’s fragrance. “We started with a feeling, where each blended essence had to have its own personality. The spirit of each fragrance inspired the characters and the story of the Second Sound Barrier”




An essence crowned with a symbol for the drivers and the driven – the racer, skimming the curves of Monaco and cliffs of the Pacific coast. This blended essence is for men of speed, who have a passion for risk taking and a penchant for style.



The Pilote de Course cap was inspired by the original bust created in the 1920s by legendary sculptor Francois Pimienta. Only two copies of this rare hood ornament are known to exist. The leather stitched base is inspired by one of Robert’s steering wheels.


Fragrance Notes:

A smooth top note of classic Vodka Citron merges with fresh Bergamot and is finished with subtle Smoky Guaiac Wood .




The bulldog has always been a symbol of fierce individuality and willful intelligence – a fitting way to top off such a determined essence. Housed in a faceted decanter and finished with a foulard print, this bottle gives a nod to the well-dressed modern gentleman.



Staunch, steadfast and spirited this English bulldog wears a hand-painted purple bowtie. The petrified wood base was inspired from a piece of wood that Robert collected on his travels.


Fragrance Notes:

This blended essence walks the line between fresh and sybaritic, mixing top notes Clary Sage, Coffee Santos and Amber Wood.




Like the legendary stamina of the horned ram whose head graces the artful decanter top, Robert Graham evokes a daring sense of self and true grit. Deep, rich and almost mystical, born of alchemy and the exotic.




The horned ram’s head, with green Swarovski crystal eyes is revered in cultures around the world as a symbol of strength and virility – a spirit summoned to bring fearlessness to warriors who could use a dose of his stamina. The steampunk gear base was inspired by Robert’s passion for race car driving and gears – the magic is in the mash up.


Fragrance Notes:

An overly sensual top note of Tobacco Absolute with secondary notes of Patchouli and Tonka Bean.
