Canton Symphony Orchestra Announces Collaboration with New Horizons Music

CANTON, OHIO (Sept. 15, 2015) –The Canton Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and New Horizons Band of Summit and Stark Counties have created a new opportunity for musicians in the community to enhance their musical skills.  The New Horizons Chamber Orchestra is open to all current New Horizons members as well as other musicians seeking orchestral experiences and musical growth.  The chamber orchestra will be conducted by Dr. Rachel Waddell, Associate Conductor of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, in consultation with Jim Adkins and Jaime Madrigal of New Horizons and Lisa Boyer, CSO Director of Education and Community Engagement.

The New Horizons Band of Summit and Stark Counties is a local chapter of the New Horizons International Music Association, a nationwide organization that provides entry points to music making for adults, including those with no musical experience and those who were active in school music programs but have been inactive for a long time.  The Summit/Stark chapter, directed by Jim Adkins, a retired instrumental music teacher, and Jaime Madrigal, string instructor, consists of a band, a separate group for beginners, a jazz ensemble, and a string ensemble all consisting of members from Canton, Cuyahoga Falls, Norton and surrounding areas.

The New Horizons Chamber Orchestra will be a full orchestra consisting of strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.  It is open to current New Horizons members as well as those who are new to the program.  (New members must enroll and pay monthly membership fees which enables them to participate in all activities, classes and ensembles currently part of the New Horizons program.)  No audition will be required but members who participate should have enough self-sufficiency with reading and performing music that they can work on assigned repertoire between rehearsals.  The first rehearsal of the Chamber Orchestra will be Sunday, September 20 at the Zimmermann Symphony Center (2331 17th Street NW in Canton) from 6:00-8:30pm. Registration information can be found at www.cantonsymphony.org.

Founded in 1937, the Canton Symphony Orchestra is a fully professional ensemble and organization dedicated to performing concerts that enrich, educate and entertain. Under the direction of Gerhardt Zimmermann, the orchestra performs classical, pops, holiday, and educational programs. Most performances are in Umstattd Performing Arts Hall, adjacent to the Zimmermann Symphony Center 2331 17th Street NW, Canton, Ohio. Parking at the Zimmermann Symphony Center is free.
