Today marks the arrival of new music from CAKE after a seven-year hiatus. The new single “Sinking Ship” is the band’s first release since their acclaimed 2011 record Showroom of Compassion, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Top 200. The band is planning a series of physical and digital single releases that will culminate with a full-length album. All earnings from “Sinking Ship” will benefit the nonprofit organization Doctors Without Borders. “Sinking Ship” will soon be available on 7″ vinyl and is out now on all streaming services.
Accompanying the release is a brand new music video for “Sinking Ship,” directed and animated by the band’s longtime collaborator Owen Streeter at Head Cleaner Films. “After talking with the band, I decided to make a stop motion video with clay characters following a story about self-destruction amongst other things,” says Cook.
“We are happy to be releasing new music; this time in the form of a series of singles,” says CAKE front man John McCrea. “‘Sinking Ship’ is quite pessimistic but somehow does not seem hyperbolic right now. All proceeds from the sale of this song will be donated to Doctors Without Borders. CAKE is proud to be able to help out in securing real leadership for the United States. It is a critical time for the world, and it is more important than ever to find leaders capable of putting country above self-interest. Real greatness comes from community, cooperation and ethical leadership.”
“The new CAKE song ‘Sinking Ship’ is a sobering meditation on the current human habitation of the planet,” says CAKE instrumentalist and backing vocalist Vince DiFiore. “Where do we go from here? It’s always worth contemplating.”
Fresh off co-headlining US summer tour dates with Ben Folds that received raves in Rolling Stone, Consequence of Sound, Boston Globe and other publications nationwide, CAKE will celebrate the release of new material with headlining tour dates across the UK and Europe. The band will stop in major cities including Brixton, Manchester, Glasgow, Luxembourg and Paris amongst others. Tickets are on-sale now at cakemusic.com/tour.
CAKE originally formed as a somewhat antagonistic response to the rock bloat of grunge. The band’s defiant DIY approach and lucid yet ever-inventive music has made them a nation-state unto themselves, with no obvious peers, belonging to no particular school. In addition to writing, arranging, producing, and performing their own music, they have taught themselves to engineer their recording projects in their solar-powered studio, which actually generates more power than is needed to run the studio, causing the building’s electrical meter to run in reverse. CAKE’s most recent album, Showroom of Compassion, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album Chart and was touted for its “deadpan brilliance” by The New Yorker.
Initially, CAKE’s small sound was mostly just mistaken for weakness, and their embracing of non-rock sonic elements was mostly mistaken for humor. Luckily, there were a few people who seemed to understand. The San Francisco Bay Guardian pointed out that “CAKE doesn’t ask you to suck its angst,” and The St. Louis Dispatch described CAKE’s music as “An utterly fresh sound, especially given today’s preponderance of overblown ‘alternative’ bands.” Somehow a copy of CAKE’s first demo tape even made it all the way to France, where it was completely understood and well received – “The drug dealers do not thank CAKE,” astutely observed French music magazine, Les Inrockuptibles.
