NEW YORK, NY: April 25, 2016 — Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC/CUNY) and the BMCC Foundation hosts the 2016 Gala, “Invest in a Future.” This annual event is scheduled Monday, June 6 in the beautiful Winter Atrium at Brookfield Place venue, 225 Liberty Street in Battery Park City. A cocktail reception will begin at 5:45 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m. The event will conclude at 9:00 p.m.

Proceeds from the event benefit the BMCC Scholarship Fund. Each year, funds raised at the Gala provide scholarships to hundreds of high-achieving students facing economic challenges to staying in school and focusing on their studies.

“The annual BMCC Foundation Scholarship Gala is an important tradition at our college that brings together members of the BMCC community, business leaders and others who share a commitment to providing scholarships to our deserving students, most of whom are the first in their families to attend college. These scholarship recipients then go on to create careers and contribute to the growth of our City and nation,” said Doris Holz, BMCC’s Vice President of Development.

This year’s Honorees are Don Callahan, Head of Operations & Technology, Citi, and Garrett Moran, President, Year Up.

Don Callahanmanages global Operations & Technology at Citi. He is the Executive Chair of the Chief Information Officer Council and leads the Digital Governance Office. Mr. Callahan is also responsible for developing and implementing Citi’s global information security strategy, and oversees Citi’s global technology agenda in more than 160 countries. He oversees Citi’s Shared Services organization, an integrated global managed services model executed through 34 Citi Service Centers, and manages Citi’s global real estate portfolio. Prior to joining Citi in 2007, Mr. Callahan held executive positions at IBM, Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse. His community service activities include serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Manhattanville College and serving on the board of the American Red Cross of Greater New York. He is a member of the Business Committee of Metropolitan Museum of Art and a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association.

Garrett Moran is the President of Year Up, a national nonprofit organization that enables low-income young adults, ages 18 to 24, to move into professional careers by taking part in a rigorous 12-month program that combines hands-on technical and professional skill development, stipends, professional internships and college credits. Mr. Garrett oversees daily operations and helps develop and execute the organization’s growth strategy. He joined Year Up in 2013 after having served as Chief Operating Officer of the Private Equity Group within The Blackstone Group, one of the world’s largest investment firms, and spearheading Blackstone’s cutting edge Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives – environmental sustainability, employee wellness and human capital. Mr. Moran served as President of Marsh & McLennan Companies, LLC, and as Co-Head at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Today, in addition to serving as President of Year Up, he is a board member of Middlebury College and the Connecticut Council for Education Reform.

Special Guest Star Honoree is Edie Falco; Four-Time Emmy ® Award Winner, Golden Globe ® Award Winner and Tony Award-Nominated Actress and Philanthropist.

Edie Falco, acclaimed actress,is known for her roles as Diane Whittlesey in the HBO series Oz; Carmela Soprano in the HBO series The Sopranos, and the titular character of the Showtime series Nurse Jackie, for which she won the Emmy® for Best Actress in both the comedy and drama categories. Ms. Falco has been nominated for a record 22 SAG Awards, and is the only actress ever to have received the Emmy® Award, the Golden Globe® Award and the SAG Award all in the same year for the same performance. She went on to win three additional Emmy® Awards, another Golden Globe® Award and two SAG Awards. Most recently, Ms. Falco starred in Louis C.K.’s new web series Horace & Pete. Her upcoming projects include Taylor Hackford’s The Comedian, where she will star alongside Robert DeNiro; and Leavey, in which she stars with Kate Mara.

Cindy Hsu, Emmy ® award-winning CBS 2 News anchor and reporter will be MC for the evening. Ms. Hsu was named “Reporter of the Year” by the NY &NJ Asian-American Law Enforcement Organization. Her personal adoption story, “Bringing Rosie Home,” won the New York AP Broadcasters Award for Best Feature and she received Emmy ® Awards for Outstanding Single Hard News Story for “Smuggled from China,” and American Women in Radio and Television honored her with the Golden Apple Award.

 

Last year’s Gala, held May 14, 2015 in Cipriani at 25 Broadway in Lower Manhattan, raised $1,113,000 in funds for student scholarships. Close to 500 guests celebrated alongside BMCC President Antonio Pérez, who presented the BMCC Award of Excellence to Special Guest Star Honoree, Emmy®- and Tony®-Award winning comedian, actor, producer, writer and director Billy Crystal. The Gala also featured Honorees Marianne Brown, Sungard Financial Systems COO, and SL Green Realty Corp CEO Marc Holliday. CBS anchor and reporter Cindy Hsu emceed the event.

Other past Gala Honorees have included film legend Robert De Niro, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, as the evening’s Special Guest Star Honoree. Long-time friend of BMCC and former BMCC Foundation board president Elizabeth Margaritas Butson was an Honoree as was Kurt Woetzel, President of BNY Mellon Markets Group.
