In 2013, the Montreal-based musical-performance art project released Impersonator, garnering praise from tastemaker and mainstream media as one of the year’s best and most notable albums. Since then, Devon Welsh has been fastidiously crafting the band’s second studio album, while simultaneously touring the world with producer Matthew Otto.
Building off a solidly-laid visual and sonic foundation, the narrative remains – simple yet emotionally forthcoming lyrics showcasing raw vulnerability, backed by sparse instrumentation and minimalist production. Welsh delivers melancholic but melody driven vocals echoing off elemental tones, praising love and friendship, commiserating over heartbreak and sadness. Written and recorded between Montreal and Detroit, it comes as no surprise that Welsh and Otto have created another soulful novella, continuing to contribute to the evolution of sound in pop, indie, and electronic music.

WIN WIN & ABSOLUTELY FREE • REMIXES
|
Arts & Crafts compatriots Absolutely Free and WIN WIN swapped remixes ahead of their appearance on last Saturday’s POP Montreal showcase. The opposing trios have found an intersection of their kaleidoscopic sounds, trading new versions of one another’s songs with a 2-track digital single. Toronto’s psych-pop-art masters Absolutely Free turn “Don’t Freak Out” from WIN WIN’s 3rd LP Primaries into a hypnotic blend of Astro-Beat synths & mono-rhythms, while the Brooklyn production outfit responds with a twilighted trip deep into “Burred Lens” off the Polaris Music Prize Long Listed debut LP Absolutely Free. True to form, WIN WIN provides a 3D window into this collaboration, weaving the Absolutely Free three into its anthropomorphic album visuals. The remixes are available for streaming and download.

Arts & Crafts headed to POP Montreal this year for our first showcase since 2012, bringing with us a selection of the diverse artists to join the label in the last year, as well as some of Toronto’s most exciting new talent.
The A&C roster was represented by Brooklyn-based production trio WIN WIN, Toronto’s psych-pop masters Absolutely Free, and UK garage rock luminaries The Cribs, who were joined by Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo. From Toronto, Drake-approved alt-R&B producer River Tiber and soulful multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Day Wilson rounded out the evening.
