The Ringling presents works by Thomas Chimes

corner

The Ringling presents works by Thomas Chimes from the permanent collection during an exhibition on display through Oct. 26.

The exhibition will feature an impressive 17-foot wide mural, preparatory sketches of the mural that show the artist’s working process and a selection of portraits. Many of the works that will be displayed were donated by his former wife Dawn Chimes to The Ringling in 2012.

“With Dawn Chimes’ generous gift of works by Thomas Chimes, The Ringling now holds a significant and representative collection of this important American artist’s paintings,” Matthew McLendon, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Ringling said. “The Ringling was the first museum to mount a solo exhibition of his work, and so it is fitting that this legacy has continued. “

Thomas Chimes (1921-2009) was born in Philadelphia and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in the Art Students League in New York. At the latter, Chimes was mentored by Frank Vicent Du Mond, who also taught John Marin and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Florida Flavor is back!

corner

Art Center Sarasota presents the second annual Florida Flavor, a juried exhibition of works by Florida artists through August 15.

Florida Flavor was created as an annual exhibition to showcase the wide-ranging talents of Florida-based artists, and includes two- and three-dimensional works in a variety of media. Ruth Grimm, chief curator of the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala, juried this year’s exhibition, which is installed in all four of the center’s galleries. According to Lisa Berger, Art Center Sarasota’s director, it’s already earned a reputation as a significant exhibition.

“This exhibition will give visitors a taste of the diverse artistic mediums and enormous talent throughout the state of Florida.” says Berger. She notes that the exhibition’s “off-season” timing will provide cultural tourists a motive to include Sarasota in their summer vacation plans. Berger adds that the exhibition’s substantial awards have attracted top artists from around the state. Florida Flavor is funded, in part, by the Sarasota County Tourist Development Tax Revenues.
