(Sarasota, Florida) Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota continues its 2015-16 Pops Series season with the celebrated Quartetto Gelato. Often called the Cirque du Soleil of classical music, Quartetto Gelato dazzles audiences with its high-energy performances, exotic blend of musical virtuosity, artistic passion and humor. In “Exotic Flavors,” the group will present a rousing selection of blazing gypsy show pieces, Celtic reels and dances, Italian folk songs and more, December 5, 7:30 p.m. and December 6, 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at the Historic Asolo Theater, 5401 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota. Virtuosic showpieces, romantic tenor arias, pyrotechnical solos, multi-instrument mastery and a world accordion champion—this is Quartetto Gelato. Classic in training and eclectic by design, the ensemble has been delighting audiences for nearly two decades with its multi-instrument mastery and a performance repertoire that spans the musical globe with classical masterworks, operatic arias, sizzling tangos, and folk songs. The quartet established itself as a dominant force on the emerging “new classical” scene early in its career when it won the coveted NPR Performance Today’s “Debut Artist of the Year” award in 1996. The selection panel hailed the quartet as “an amazing ensemble that achieves the nearly impossible; they play salon music with real style and classical music with real precision; great chops and a commitment in all that they play.”
Quartetto Gelato consists of Peter DeSotto (tenor, violin, mandolin), Alexander Sevastian (accordion, piano, bandoneon), Liza McLellan (cello), Colin Maier (oboe), and Liza McElellan (cello).
Since 1996, Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota has presented an ever-expanding annual season of concerts by globally renowned and celebrated emerging artists. The 20th-anniversary season includes six concerts in its “Classical Recital Series,” five concerts in its “Pop Series,” four concerts in its “Special Performances” series, three “Soiree Series” concerts, three “Lunch, Look and Listen” concerts and three concerts in its North Port Performing Arts series. Many of the concerts are presented in multiple performances.
