Andrea Kalyn will become the 17th president of New England Conservatory.

Andrea is currently the Dean of the Conservatory at Oberlin College.  Her deep commitment to music excellence, her strong relationship with faculty, and her profound sense of responsibility for music education as a force in the world results in a very distinctive leadership profile. Among esteemed candidates for the position, she emerged as the top candidate. Andrea’s experience and personal mission align very well with NEC’s values, and she is the right president to lead this renowned institution into the future. We are confident that Andrea will inspire and energize our vibrant music community, the city, and the broader world of music. Andrea will join NEC in January 2019.

Andrea was appointed Oberlin’s Dean of the Conservatory in February 2014.  Prior to that, she was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. As dean, Andrea is chief academic officer of a school that includes 580 undergraduate musicians and 120 faculty and staff.  She has established and implemented the vision and priorities of the conservatory within the context of Oberlin’s broader educational mission.

Andrea earned her Ph.D. in musicology from the Eastman School of Music, where her scholarship focused on American music of the 20th century. Her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, also in musicology, are from the University of Western Ontario. She also holds an ARCT in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music.

I want to thank the Trustee Search Committee members: Tom Blumenthal, Barbara Glauber, Tom McGrath, Tom Novak, Sally Rubin, Chad Smith ’95 ’98 and Mike Thonis, for their dedication and diligence in this effort, so crucial to the future of this revered institution. I am deeply grateful to the members of the Search Advisory Committee and faculty who provided guidance and input during the search process.

Larry Lesser, President Emeritus, faculty member, and Search Advisory Committee member, underscores the Committee’s enthusiasm, “I am so very excited for NEC that Andrea Kalyn is our new President. She has the experience, the drive, and the vision to take us into the future. Her values and aspirations are the perfect fit for who we are now, and how we want to go forward.”

We are thrilled that Andrea has accepted the role of President of NEC and we know she is the right person to lead NEC into the future.
