Tonight, Alabama Shakes will perform on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” The appearance follows lead singer/guitarist Brittany Howard’s performance with the all-star band led by Mavis Staples on Colbert’s inaugural “Late Show.” Billboardhas named Howard as the 2015 Women in Music “Powerhouse” artist. The Women in Music ceremony will air on Lifetime on December 18. She will be doing a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” chat this Friday, October 30, at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Howard recently performed with Sam Moore of the legendary soul duo Sam & Dave at the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize Ceremony honoring Eddie Murphy, which will air on November 23 on PBS. The lineup also includedChris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Kathy Griffin, Arsenio Hall, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan, Kevin Nealon, Trevor Noah, Jay Pharoah, Joe Piscopo and other special guests.
Alabama Shakes – comprising Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson, and touringkeyboard players Ben Tanner and Paul Horton – made history whenSound & Color, debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200, becoming the first female-fronted rock band to top the list without the benefit of having first charted a Top 40 single on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also topped the Independent, Digital, Rock, Alternative, Internet and Vinyl Albums charts. Sound & Color, which is the follow-up to the band’s GRAMMY®-nominated 2012 debut, Boys & Girls, was co-produced by the band and Blake Mills.
The video for the title track, which was directed by James Frost (Radiohead, Coldplay, OK Go), has been nominated for the VEVO Vision Award. The band received three SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Awards nominations – for Album of the Year, Duo/Group of the Year and Song of the Year (“Gimme All Your Love”). “Don’t Wanna Fight” was named Song of the Year at the 2015 FMQB Triple A Conference.
Sound & Color is one of the most wonderfully unique rock records of the past five years,”observed SPIN. Rolling Stone said, “Gimme All Your Love” should rival the most thrilling music experiences you’ll have in 2015″ and hailed Sound & Color as one of the best albums of 2015 (so far), as did Esquire, NPR, NME, the Los Angeles Times and many others. “They rocked SNL and conquered Coachella. Now the bluesy, funky foursome…return with a newly expanded sonic palate,” said Entertainment Weekly, which put Sound & Color on “The Must List.”
Alabama Shakes‘ European headline tour kicks off with a pair of Dublin shows and will conclude with two sold-out nights at London’s O2 Academy Brixton. The band will play a pair of radio station holiday shows in the Pacific Northeast in December – KNRK-Portland’s “December To Remember” and KNDD-Seattle’s “The End’s Deck The Hall Ball” – and head to South America in March 2016.
