LOS ANGELES – A high-spirited look inside the resurgence of the international swing dance community, ALIVE AND KICKING, arrives on DVD and Digital HD on July 11 from Magnolia Home Entertainment. Susan Glatzer makes her directorial debut with the enthralling documentary that revisits the origins of swing, slides onto the dance floor with competitive modern-day enthusiasts, and examines the positive mental and emotional affects of dancing.

The SXSW Film Festival 2016 “Grand Jury Award” nominee for documentary feature, ALIVE AND KICKING celebrates the vibrant history of swing, and the joy it continues to bring to dancers today. Originating in Harlem during the Great Depression, swing was created to alleviate the economic and social stressors of the 1930s. Since its revival, swing has not only proven to be a fun and competitive past time, but has also aided in strengthening human connection within our modern society that has become overwhelmingly reliant on digital communication. The film features archival footage and recent interviews with swing legends Norma Miller and the late Frankie Manning, alongside new, vivacious swing dancers making their mark on the dance floor. Swinging into the modern-day dance community, ALIVE AND KICKING gives audiences the chance to see how the dance can enhance the mental and emotional lives of people from all walks of life.

Special features for ALIVE AND KICKING includes commentary from Director Susan Glatzer and Director of Photography John W. MacDonald, deleted scenes, an interview with Glatzer, and a theatrical trailer. ALIVE AND KICKING will be available on DVD for the suggested retail price of $26.98, and on Digital HD via iTunes, Amazon Video, FandangoNOW, Google Play and additional digital retailers on July 11.

Synopsis

ALIVE AND KICKING gives the audience an intimate, insider’s view into the culture of the current swing dance world while shedding light on issues facing modern society. No matter what troubles they are facing in their lives, swing dancers are filled with joy, exhilaration, and even giddiness while they dance. Boiled down to its core, swing dancing is about the pursuit of happiness. Most people think of happiness as a passive emotion: if something good happens, I will be happy. But we all have the ability to feel joy despite the worst of circumstances once we realize that happiness exists inside of us.
