Swedish pop group THE MAGNETTES have just dropped their new single “Sad Girls Club.” The infectious and assertive anthem–which will resonate loudly with all girls who are fed up with being told how to feel, act and look–is available now on all digital retailers and will be included on their forthcoming debut album, Ugly Youth, to be released in the U.S. April 7 on Nashville-based label DigSin. “Sad Girls Club” is heating up worldwide and is currently being featured on Spotify’s coveted New Music Friday playlist in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.
“The Sad Girls Club is not something we invented,” the band shares. “It’s a movement that we’re part of. It’s the idea of a sanctuary, for whatever reason, that treats you as the person you want to be. Where you’re allowed to be sad, different or plain hostile. To counteract a world that tells you to smile when everything systematically sucks. This is our party and we’ll cry if we want to.”
THE MAGNETTES–co-vocalists Rebecka Digervall and Sanna Kalla, and guitarist/keyboardist/producer Tomas Bäcklund Thuneström–intentionally chose January 20 as the release date for “Sad Girls Club” as a fierce retort to Donald Trump’s inauguration. The “Sad Girls Club” movement also extends to an online community at their newly launched website, www.themagnettes.com, and www.sadgirlsclub.net where everyone is encouraged to share their unfiltered feelings of frustration, sadness, fear or anger; Rebecka and Sanna explain this support initiative here. THE MAGNETTES are also releasing new t-shirts as part of the “Sad Girls Club” which display lyrics from the song and the words #fucktrump.
For the new album, the trio co-produced alongside American producer/mixer Christian Cummings, whose credits include Tiësto, Icona Pop, Florence + The Machine’s Isabella Summers and OneRepublic’s Brent Kutzle. Ugly Youth will highlight the band’s signature sound: a rebellious spirit, unfiltered and unapologetic views, paired with sugary sweet, infectious beats.
“We’re reclaiming the word ‘Ugly,'” declares Sanna. “Why does beautiful have to be the standard? Why can’t anything that is not totally perfect be cool? We have no regrets. We’re saying exactly what we want to say.”
“There’s some sort of Northern rebellion,” adds Tomas. “We don’t want to be your average singing self-obsessed diary entries. We aim to do something bigger. However, we want to do it without moving to Stockholm, London, or L.A. and writing songs about beaches and being super fit. Because what’s interesting about that?”
The seeds of rebellion first became planted when co-vocalists Rebecka Digervall and Sanna Kalla met at 6-years-old in their small town Pajala in Sweden. THE MAGNETTES fondly call this city of 2,000 home and it’s the birthplace of their infectious and inimitable glitter punk pop sound. By age 14, Rebecka had written a plethora of songs for them as a duo and in 2012 they began performing across Europe and Russia. They’ve performed at several festivals overseas, as well as Canadian Music Week and SXSW and CMJ here in the States. They’ve released a series of singles– “Bones,”“Killers In A Ghost Town,”“Hollywood”–and Ugly Youth will be their first full-length release.

“The Magnettes are here to offer a refreshingly different take on the country’s musical reputation…singers Rebecka Digervall and Sanna Kalla put a badass spin on the typical cheerleader look to deliver their cheeky, Icona Pop-meets-Sleigh Bells sound in their small Swedish town of Pajala.”

“The Magnettes have delivered a brilliant new single in ‘Killers In A Ghost Town,’ a black-hearted love song and call to arms for every bored teenage girl who’s outgrown her small town’s offerings. This one is for rural misfits and the glorious rebellion seeded in teenage friendships.”
