Ringling College Selby Gallery Presents Cuban Art from the Collection of Jorge Reynardus
A selection of paintings and sculpture by Cuban artists weaves a narrative of history, and politics
November 6-December 9, 2015
Sarasota, FL – Opening at the Selby Gallery on November 6, Cuban Art from the Collection of Jorge Reynardus, is comprised of over 30 paintings and sculpture by renowned artists investigating their personal experiences with and relationships to their homeland, Cuba. Assembled while Jorge Reynardus lived in New York, this selection will include the works of Jose Bédia, Augustin Fernández, Wifredo Lam and Glexis Novoa.
Amassed over several decades and purchased directly from the artists themselves, this collection was built through the personal relationships Reynardus maintained with many of Cuba’s working artists and highlights the distinct experiences of being an artist in Cuba under the rule of Fidel Castro. Exploring the concepts of expression and freedom, these works create a first-person narrative about life, liberty, culture, and national pride.
Jorge Reynardus is a Sarasota resident and art collector.
