City of Chicago Offering a Responsible Way to Dispose of Documents and Electronics at Shredder Day
Safely Shred Personal Documents For Free in the United Center Parking Lot

The City of Chicago invites consumers and businesses to protect their identities from fraud by shredding unwanted personal, financial or confidential documents for FREE at the annual Shredder Day event. The event will be held Saturday, June 27, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — gates close at 12:45 p.m. — at the United Center, 1901 W. Madison St., Lot A.
Free electronics recycling will also be available. TVs, monitors, laptops, PCs, servers, data storage devices, printers, fax/copy machines, cell phones, VCRs, DVD players, video cameras and game consoles are among the types of electronic equipment that will be accepted.
“Improperly destroying documents and electronics can result in your personal information being compromised and in the end could result in identity theft,”said Commissioner Maria Guerra Lapacek, of the City of Chicago’s Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. “This is one of the safest ways to discard personal information.”
Along with the City of Chicago, this annual event is hosted by the Better Business Bureau, the Chicago Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Federal Trade Commission, the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, and the United States Postal Inspection Service. Shredding and recycling services will be provided by Accurate Document Destruction, Beaver Shredding Inc., Chicago Shred Authority, Paper Tiger Shredding, PROSHRED and Vintage Tech Recyclers.
Free home shredders will be given away every 15 minutes and participants are asked to limit the material they want shredded to 10 boxes of documents per vehicle.
