The Birth of the Cool: Miles Davis and Gerry Mulligan

While the bebop style is being explored in the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, the small ensembles will delve into one reaction to Bebop known as Cool Jazz, a style that arose after World War II. Characterized by its relaxed tempi and lighter tone, it was a unique blending of jazz and classical music, including its instrumentation and counterpoint.

Juilliard Drama Group 45 (fourth-year actors)

In 1963 South African an Afrikaner anti-apartheid activist Piet and his wife of English descent Gladys arrange a reunion dinner for Steve, a black South African and longtime friend and comrade of Piet in the anti-apartheid movement. The image of drought, literal and figurative, past and pending, is threaded throughout the play, as the three characters share stories and tell hard truth in the face of the stark future ahead. This moving play about the intersection of the political and the personal by the internationally acclaimed South African Playwright Athol Fugard won the Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play when it was presented on Broadway in 1980.

Playwrights Program alumna Jen Silverman returns to Juilliard with this haunting and darkly comic play about three women and a child who never got to be born. Still follows Morgan, a mother in mourning over a stillborn child, Elena her midwife, and Dolores an eighteen year old sometime dominatrix. Constantinople, the child Morgan never had, in wandering the world searching for his mother, encounters all three women and changes their lives. In awarding Still the very prestigious Yale Horn Prize in 2013, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Marsha Norman wrote, “I have read other plays on [this] subject, but none…as elegant in formal structure, none with language both surreal and trashy, none as funny, and none as moving.”

How difficult is it to become someone new?  Betty decides to take over the life of her sister who has died in a freak bicycle accident.  Against all odds, this transformation seems to be going well.  But then Betty’s son is murdered and she is the primary suspect. John Guare’s Landscape of the Body explores the American dream in this darkly humorous drama about finding yourself.  Obie and Tony award winner and heralded author of House of Blue Leaves and Six Degrees of Separation, Guare was elected to the Theatre Hall of Fame in 1993.
