Zorá Quartet Performs First Residency Recital

PHILADELPHIA—October 28, 2016— The Zorá Quartet performs their first residency recital on Friday, October 28 at 8 p.m. in Field Concert Hall at the Curtis Institute of Music. In residence through the Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet Program, the quartet will cover a wide swath of the repertoire, with works from Mozart, Webern, and Shostakovich.
Mozart’s String Quartet in D minor, K. 421, the second of his so-called ‘Haydn quartets’, is full of dramatic anguish, while Anton Webern, perhaps most famous for his twelve-tone compositions and atonality, evokes a more romantic feel in his Langsamer Satz. George Xiaoyuan Fu (Piano ’16) joins the quartet for Shostakovich’s Quintet in G minor, Op. 57, to finish the program, the first of two residency recitals as part of 2016-17 Student Recital Series.

The Zorá Quartet—violinists Dechopol Kowintaweewat and Seula Lee, violist Pablo Muñoz Salido, and cellist Zizai Ning—won the grand prize and gold medal at the 2015 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. As a result, they toured the Midwest and appeared at the 2016 Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy. Also in 2015, they won the Coleman National Chamber Music Competition and the 2015 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.
In 2016 the Zorá Quartet participated in the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Encounters program, concluding with a performance at Alice Tully Hall, and appeared at Chamber Music Northwest and the Oregon Music Festival. They have also participated in chamber music residencies at the Banff Centre (Canada); in the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival (Connecticut); and in the Advanced Quartet Studies program of the Aspen Music Festival, where they worked intensively with Earl Carlyss, the Takács Quartet, the Pacifica Quartet, and the American String Quartet. They previously served as graduate quartet in residence at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, working with the Pacifica Quartet and Atar Arad. In 2014 they were string quartet in residence at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, Germany. Their name, “Zorá,” means “sunrise” in Bulgarian.
The Nina von Maltzahn String Quartet Program at the Curtis Institute of Music admits young quartets of extraordinary promise who have been formed for at least one year. Ensembles admitted into this two-year diploma program consist of excellent musicians both individually and collectively, have clear aspirations for a career as a professional quartet, and demonstrate an affinity for Curtis’s “learn by doing” approach to artistic development.
