Cinderella

at Gallery Met from April 12

New York, NY (April 12, 2018) –William Wegman’s Weimaraners star in a solo exhibition by the artist at the Arnold & Marie Schwartz Gallery Met to coincide with the much anticipated production of Massenet’s Cendrillon, on stage at the Met from April 12, 2018. More than 25 photographs featuring the celebrated dogs in costumes and settings designed by the artist retell the classic tale of Cinderella. The exhibition, free to the public, runs through May 5, 2018.

Created using a large-format (24×20) Polaroid camera, the photographs feature in the book Cinderella, for which Wegman also wrote the text, published by Hyperion in 1993. The Gallery Met exhibition is the first time all of the photographs will be shown together in New York.

Gallery Met director Dodie Kazanjian said: “Bill’s ever-fertile imagination sheds new light on the classic fairy tale. His images are startling, hilarious and vintage Wegman – without neglecting the story’s darker undercurrents.”

Wegman is currently being celebrated in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition Before/On/After: William Wegman and California Conceptualism. A new book, William Wegman: Being Human, has recently been published by Thames & Hudson and Chronicle Books, and a related traveling exhibition will open at the Rencontres d’Arles in July 2018. Since the early 1970s, the pioneering photographer, video artist, conceptualist, painter and writer’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. In addition to solo shows with Sonnabend Gallery in Paris and New York, Situation Gallery in London and Konrad Fisher Gallery in Dusseldorf, his work was included in such seminal exhibitions as When Attitudes Become Form, and Documenta V and regularly featured in Interfunktionen, Artforum and Avalanche magazines. Over the years the artist’s canine muses have made memorable appearances on Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, Sesame Street and even as models in an Acne fashion campaign.
