Vicky Shick Dance Pathétique, Miniatures in Details
AT 92Y HARKNESS DANCE FESTIVAL
March 6-8
NEW YORK, NY: For the third week of 92nd Street Y’s Harkness Dance Festival, Vicky Shick reunites with longtime collaborators, costume designer Barbara Kilpatrick and sound designer Elise Kermani, to remount her magical program Pathétique, Miniatures in Details. The trio has been described by The New York Times as “one of the most reliably beguiling teams in dance.”
Shick’s work highlights the intimacies among dancers who inhabit the slightly wacky worlds that she creates.Pathétique, Miniatures in Detail offers a very deliberate weaving together of sound, costume and choreography in what Shick calls “a total merging of the visual, aural, and physical aspects of the dance.” The whimsical costumes by Kilpatrick are designed to produce sound when in motion and the multilayered sound composition by Kermani is mixed and performed live. Shick builds on a series of solos and duets, maintaining her devotion to detail and gently mysterious behavior.
Using festival curator Doug Varone’s “Stripped/Dressed” format, each choreographer usually spends the first half of the program taking apart the dance – talking about it, showing how it was built and giving the audience a direct experience of dance-making without lights or costumes. After intermission, the work is presented fully “Dressed.”
In the “Stripped” portion of Pathétique, Miniatures in Details however, Shick is planning to present what she describes as “a playful exaggeration of the ‘Dressed’ portion which will serve in some way as a prologue, revealing things that may later be recognized, while offering something different and new with an added performer, newly choreographed sections, added costumes, and different sound.”
This year’s Festival is dedicated to the late Theodore S. Bartwink, long-time executive director of the Harkness Foundation for Dance.

About 92Y Harkness Dance Center
In 1935, what became the 92Y Harkness Dance Center provided a home to the fledgling American modern dance movement and its leader, Martha Graham. In the decades that followed, every great American dancer and choreographer – visionaries including Alvin Ailey, Merce Cunningham, Jerome Robbins, Agnes de Mille, Robert Joffrey and Donald McKayle – spent time at 92Y, building the foundation for modern dance as we know it. Through the generous support of the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the Dance Center continues this proud tradition of dance teaching, creation and performance, serving the professional world and the community at large. Technique classes range from ballet and modern dance to hip-hop and Flamenco. Rounding out the program are several performance programs including the annual 92Y Harkness Dance Festival; a professional development program for dance educators; and several teen dance troupes.
