Urbanite Theatre Announces Inaugural Season of Plays

(Full Release) – Urbanite Theatre will present three plays, all Florida premieres, in the company’s inaugural season. The trio of new works will begin in April and conclude in early September.

Sarasota’s newest downtown theatre will celebrate its grand opening by presenting the US premiere of CHICKEN SHOP, by Anna Jordan. The play, recently named the 2014 London Fringe Production of the Year by the West End Frame awards, is being presented in a brand new, original version for Urbanite’s production, running April 10 to May 3. Co-Artistic Directors Brendan Ragan and Summer Wallace have been actively collaborating with playwright Anna Jordan (YEN – Bruntwood Prize for Playwrighting) on the new script, which will be set in United States.

Auditions for CHICKEN SHOP will be held on Sunday, February 15th. Local actors are encouraged to visit Urbanite’s website (www.urbanitetheatre.com) for details.

In June, Urbanite Theatre will present REBORNING by Zayd Dohrn. Dohrn, the son of former Weather Underground leaders Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, is the recipient of numerous awards and achievements including the 2015 Chautauqua New Play Commission, Theatre Masters’ Visionary Playwright Awards, and the Kennedy Center Jean Kennedy Smith Award, among others. Urbanite will stage just the fifth production of what LA Times heralded “an undeniably powerful” script, from June 12 to July 5.

Urbanite Theatre closes the summer season with the regional premiere of Lucas Hnath’s ISAAC’S EYE, winner of the 2012 Whitfield Cook Award. Hnath’s plays have made regular appearances at the Humana Festival, and have been produced at Actors Theatre of Louisville, South Coast Repertory (CA), Playwrights Horizons (NYC), and the Royal Court Theatre (London). ISAAC’S EYE will run at Urbanite Theatre from August 14 to September 6.

Tickets for all productions will go on sale in March. Dates and titles subject to change, pending rights agreements.
