About The Perlman Music Program’s Summer Music School

Founded by Toby Perlman 21 years ago, the Perlman Music Program (PMP) is the premier summer school and mentorship program for young classical musicians. The Summer Music School (SMS) – affectionately nicknamed the “Littles” program – is PMP’s signature and longest-running program. Established as a two-week summer camp in East Hampton by Toby Perlman in 1994, the SMS today is an intensive seven-week residency on Shelter Island for violin, viola, cello, and bass players ages 12-18. With an esteemed faculty led by Itzhak Perlman, the SMS provides a supportive and nurturing community focused on the overall well-being of its student body, with a curriculum of solo, chamber music, and orchestral repertoire study at the highest level.

Performance opportunities every week give students the chance to refine their repertoire for supportive audiences. On Friday and Saturdays during the SMS, music lovers are invited to enjoy Works in Progress concerts in the Geffenberg Performance Tent on PMP’s Shelter Island campus. On Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31, the PMP String Orchestra and Chorus perform in two very special concerts for the East End Community: the Annual Orchestra and Chorus Concert on the North Fork (July 30), and the Annual Summer Benefit Celebrating 15 Years on Shelter Island (July 31, see perlmanmusicprogram.org/events for more information.)

Conducted by Itzhak Perlman, the PMP String Orchestra is truly one-of-a-kind.  Students are seated non-competitively to eliminate the pressure of “ranking”, and they rotate seats between movements so each player has a chance to take leading and supporting roles. The result is a seamless ensemble of energetic and joyous music-making. The whole PMP community sings together in chorus led by Patrick Romano, where students develop listening skills and have fun! While students are not expected to be trained singers, PMP believes that the skills needed for singing directly correlate to those they are mastering on their instruments.

During the 2015 program, 38 young string players from all over the world are studying with world-class faculty including Rachel Calin, Catherine Cho, D. Edward Davis, Kirsten Docter, Yi-Fang Huang, Sean Lee, Ron Leonard, Li Lin, Merry Peckham, Itzhak Perlman, Carol Rodland, Patrick Romano, John Root, and Pauline Yang.

Visit us on Shelter Island for concerts every Friday and Saturday this summer!

The Perlman Music Program campus is located at 73 Shore Road, Shelter Island Heights, NY, 11965
