“Deux Requiuems”
The First Brass of Sarasota, Musica Sacra Cantorum and the Canterbury Girls Choir of the Church of the Redeemer are collaborating to present “Deux Requiems: The Sleeping Children” on Monday, April 13, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at The Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave., Sarasota, FL.
The First Brass opens the concert with “Fanfare for the Brave”, a heroic ton poem depicting the first responders who selflessly help those in peril. The second half open with “They Gave All” by Andrew Wolfe of The Denver Brass.
The ensembles will join together to perform the U.S. premiere of “Tsunami Requiem.” The composer, Chris Williams recalls the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that devastated Nagapattinam, a fishing village in Tamil Nadu, South India, leaving more than 230,000 people dead in its wake. “Tsunami Requiem” tells that story sing ten brass musician, percussion, organ, adult and children choirs. From an effervescent opening to a lilting lullaby, “Tsunami Requiem” is a moving powerful piece of music which make the human spirit soar.
The choirs with orchestra will also present Gabriel Fauré’s original 1887 version of the “Requiem Mass.” There is no more beautifully meditative or calming musical setting of the “Requiem Mass” than that of Gabriel Fauré. It is a composition which is simple, effective and hauntingly beautiful.
