Clinton, Iowa—The Dayton Dragons exploded for 17 runs and 18 hits as they defeated the Clinton Lumber Kings 17-7 on Friday night to complete a sweep of the three-game series. The win lifted the Dragons into a tie for the wildcard spot in the Midwest League East Division playoff race with 15 games to play in the first half season.

It was the Dragons first road series sweep since July 29-31, 2014 when they won all three games at Lansing. The Dragons scored 29 runs in the three games at Clinton.

The Dragons established season highs in runs, hits (18), extra base hits (9), doubles (5), and triples (5) on Friday. They built a 10-1 lead over the first four innings, saw Clinton cut the margin to 10-6 in the sixth, before the Dragons responded with two runs in the seventh, three in the eighth, and two in the ninth to win the game going away.

All nine Dayton starters had at least one hit. Jonathan Reynoso led the attack, going 4 for 6 with two triples, and four runs scored. Gavin LaValley had two doubles and a triple, driving in three. Luis Gonzalez drove in five runs with two doubles. Ronald Bueno had two hits and three runs batted in. Brian O’Grady had two hits including the Dragons only home run. Jimmy Pickens also had two hits.

The Dragons jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning when O’Grady blasted a long home run to right field with a runner on base to make it 2-0. It was O’Grady’s second homer of the year. Bueno’s two-run double in the second made it 4-0. The Dragons broke open a 5-1 game in the fourth when they put together a five-run inning to take a 10-1 lead.

After Clinton scored five in the fifth to make it 10-6, Gonzalez delivered a two-run double in the seventh and then added a three-run double in the eighth to extend the lead to 15-6.

Dragons starting pitcher Junior Morillo made his first appearance in an official game since April 8, 2014 when he suffered an elbow injury that required surgery. Morillo earned the win, going five innings and allowing three hits and one run with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Dragons gained a game on both Lansing and Bowling Green to move to within two games of the first place Lugnuts and into a tie with the second place Hot Rods. Great Lakes is only a game and a half behind Dayton and Bowling Green.

The Dragons (30-25) will open a new three-game series in the Chicago western suburb of Geneva, Illinois on Saturday when they battle the Kane County Cougars (27-28) at 7:30 p.m. (EDT). Tejay Antone (3-4, 2.18), who has been selected to pitch in the Midwest League All-Star Game, will start for the Dragons. Wei-Chieh Huang (2-0, 0.71) will start for Kane County.

The Dragons next home game is Wednesday, June 10 when they host the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Fifth Third Field.
