Monday, August 11, 2014 // Toronto, ON – The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall announces details of its 2014|15 Season, welcoming an array of artists who span the spectrum of entertainment and musical genres. The season will include performances by celebrated musicians such as Chick Corea & Herbie Hancock in a rare duo piano performance, the incomparable Itzhak Perlman, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Blues artists Colin James, Downchild Blues Band, and the legendary Buddy Guy who returns to Massey Hall for his 11th straight year.

 

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra led by superstar trumpeter and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, Evgeny Kissin in recital, and Bobby McFerrin in a performance dedicated to Toronto titled Bobby Meets Canada: Toronto!, Sinéad O’Connor, Ron Sexsmith with very special guest Alejandra Ribera, Pink Martini, and late night funnyman Jay Leno all make welcome returns, as does the 28th edition of Toronto Blues Society’s Women’s Blues Revue featuringa stellar all-female cast including Divine Brown, Andria Simone, Shakura S’Aida, Diana Braithwaite, Rebecca Hennessy, Brandi Disterheft, and more. A very special 25th Annual Massed Military Band Spectacular tribute to the 100th anniversary of the First World War, the Massey Hall headlining debut for Jill Barber, a return from the Polaris Music Prize-nominated duo Whitehorse, and a four-night run with the iconic Gordon Lightfoot whose legendary Massey Hall concerts have now surpassed 150 performances since the 1960s are also scheduled.

 

The Corporation is proud to continue its support of Canadian talent and presents Canadian Songbook concerts at Winter Garden Theatre, Harbourfront Centre Theatre (formerly Enwave Theatre), The Great Hall, and The Rivoli. Showcasing some of the country’s brightest songwriters and performers, Massey Hall presents Jenn Grant, Groenland, Thus Owls, Darrelle London, Amelia Curran, Spencer Burton, Jadea Kelly, Adam Cohen, Kevin Fox, Mo Kenney, The Once, multiple Latin Grammy Award-winner Alex Cuba, and An Evening with Oh Susanna.

 

LIVE AT MASSEY HALL SERIES

Live at Massey Hall is a live concert and concert filming series devoted to Canadian artists. With tickets to the live events priced at a symbolic $18.94, a nod to the year of the historic venue’s beginning, the concerts are filmed and later broadcast online at liveatmasseyhall.com. For 2014|15, Massey Hall is proud to announce headlining debuts from Hayden, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith, and Shad as part of its exciting second season.

 

The concerts filmed during its inaugural season start to premiere today at liveatmasseyhall.com with films featuring Bry Webb and Destroyer. The series, directed by Mitch Fillion, will debut a new film regularly over the coming weeks and will include films including Timber Timbre, Great Lake Swimmers, Cold Specks, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Basia Bulat, and Cœur de pirate. In its fifth season, National Geographic Live returns to Roy Thomson Hall introducing a new 2:00PM Sunday Matinee show in addition to the standard two evening presentations for each speaker. Each presentation features world-renowned photographers and filmmakers who take Toronto audiences behind their adventures and projects for National Geographic. The series kicks off October 5, 6, and 7 with a roar as wildlife photographer Steve Winter presents On the Trail of Big Cats: Tigers, Cougars, & Snow Leopards. Jazz at Massey Hall has a great legacy. From the famous concert in 1953 with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Bud Powell, and Max Roach through to the high profile jazz artists of today, Massey Hall has been home to some of the most legendary concerts in history. The 2014|15 season brings Chick Corea & Herbie Hancock, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, and Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood to the Massey Hall stage. The popular Classic Albums Live brings top studio musicians to the Halls as they re-create over four evenings Who’s Next (The Who), Let It Be (The Beatles), Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin), and Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd) in their entirety. Note for note. Cut for cut.

 

This season promises Holiday concerts featuring A Barra MacNeils Christmas with Rose Cousins, David Francey, and Lennie Gallant, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Roch Voisine, David Myles, and The Good Lovelies in addition to seasonal traditions such as Toronto Children’s Chorus, Bravissimo! Opera’s Greatest Hits, New Year’s Eve Comedy Extravaganza hosted by Tom Green, and New Year’s Day Salute to Vienna.

For 16 seasons now, the Corporation’s Arts and Education Outreach Program, Share the Music, has been providing youth of all backgrounds with the opportunity to witness the world’s finest artists in concert at Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall and attend related pre-concert demonstrations and workshops with local musicians. With the help of sponsors and donors, the doors to a world of music and entertainment are opened, often for the first time – and perhaps for life. In addition, Roy Thomson Hall is proud to present its 18th annualChoir and Organconcert series, offered to the public free of charge (all dates listed below), showcasing the Hall’s magnificent Gabriel Kney pipe organ, one of Canada’s largest mechanical-action instruments.
