Lucas appeared in 163 games for Marlins in 2013-14

Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has received infielder Ed Lucas from the Miami Marlins on a waiver claim.

Lucas, 32, spent the majority of 2014 with Miami, batting .251 (45-179) with one home run and nine RBI in 69 games. The right-handed batter saw action at all four infield positions and in left and right fields, making starts at 2B (16), SS (13), RF (3), and 3B (2). Lucas batted .329 (24-73) vs. left-handers and posted a .364 (8-22) overall batting average in his final 16 games beginning August 24.

Lucas opened 2014 on the Marlins’ disabled list with a fractured left hand and played in three games on rehab assignment at High-A Jupiter before being activated on April 29. He also batted .261 with three RBI in 14 games over two stints with Triple-A New Orleans (July 19-29; July 31-August 7).

He has a .255 (135-530) career batting average with 5 homers and 37 RBI in 163 major league games, all with Miami in 2013-14. Originally selected by Kansas City in the 2004 First Year Player Draft, Lucas spent over nine seasons in the Royals, Braves, Angels, and Marlins minor league systems before making his major league debut with Miami on May 30, 2014. He went on to bat .256 with 4 homers and 28 RBI in 94 games with the Marlins in 2013.

With today’s move, Texas has 38 players on the club’s 40-man roster.
