TEXAS RANGERS PLACE 1B-OF JIM ADDUCI ON 7-DAY CONCUSSION DL;

PURCHASE CONTRACT OF INF-OF RYAN RUA FROM ROUND ROCK

RHP Phil Irwin released to make room on major league roster

Houston, TX – The Texas Rangers today announced that 1B-OF Jim Adduci has been placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

To replace Adduci on the active roster, Texas has purchased the contract of INF-OF Ryan Rua from Triple-A Round Rock of the Pacific Coast League. Rua (#16) will be in uniform for tonight’s game in Houston.

To make room for Rua on the major league roster, RHP Phil Irwin has been placed on unconditional release waivers.

Adduci was injured when he hit his head on the warning track and side wall while making a catch in foul territory in the fourth inning on Thursday night’s game with the Astros. He is batting .173 with one homer and 8 RBI in 42 games with Texas this season. This is his second DL stint as he was sidelined from April 18-July 20 with a fractured left little finger. This is the 26th time Texas has used the DL this season with 15 players currently on the list.

The 24-year-old Rua has combined to bat .306 (144-471) with 26 doubles, 3 triples, 18 home runs, and 74 RBI over 129 games with Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock this season. He is tied for fifth among all Rangers minor leaguers in both home runs and RBI. The right-handed batter opened the campaign in Frisco and was a Texas League mid-season All-Star selection, batting .300 (77-257) with 10 home runs and 38 RBI in 71 games with the ‘Riders.

Rua was promoted to Round Rock on June 26 and has hit .313 (67-214) with 8 home runs and 36 RBI in 58 games with the Express. He has batted .350 (35-100) with 8 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs, and 14 RBI over 28 games in August, including a 4-for-5 and 4 RBI effort in Round Rock’s 10-7 win over Nashville last night. The Lake Erie (OH) College product has seen action at first, second, third, and in left field this season. Rua was a 17th round selection by Texas in the 2011 MLB First Year Player Draft.

Irwin, who was on the disabled list at Round Rock, was claimed on waiver by Texas from Pittsburgh on May 28 and was 5-2, 3.51 in 11 games/10 starts with the Express. He was recalled by the Rangers to make a spot start on July 8 vs. Houston, taking the loss in an 8-3 game (4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R-ER).

When Rua appears in a game, he will be the 59th player to play for Texas this season, tying the major league record with the 2002 Indians, 2002 Padres, and 2008 Padres. He becomes the 20th rookie on the active roster this season, a new club record.

With today’s moves, the Rangers’ major league roster remains at 40 players.
