SunCoast Blood Bank Awarded Grant
The Harry Sudakoff Foundation Awards $30,000 for X-ray Technology
Sarasota, FL- The Harry Sudakoff Foundation has awarded SunCoast Blood Bank (SCBB) $30,000 to help fund the purchase of a Raycell MK2 X-ray Blood Irradiator. An irradiator is the most vital piece of technology necessary to operate the transfusion services of a blood bank and SCBB has launched a capital campaign to replace its aging technology. All patients with a compromised immune system must receive irradiated blood to prevent a rare, but nearly 100 percent fatal complication of transfusion called Transfusion Associated Graft-Versus Host Disease. Newborns, as well as cancer patients and others with compromised immune systems, can only be transfused with irradiated blood.
