Through August 19

(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota welcomes young artists to use their imagination and creativity during a variety of summer camps. Creative Kids Camp is for youth ages 6 to 10. Emerging Artists Camp is for pre-teen and teens ages 11 to 15. The weekly themed sessions run through August 19. Camp hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Before- and after-care is offered at no extra charge. Fees are $210 a week for Art Center Sarasota members; $260 a week for non-members. A $15 sibling discount is offered. Fees include all supplies. Camp sessions are at Art Center Sarasota, 707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For more information and to register, call 941-366-0585 or visit www.artsarasota.org/summercamp.

Lisa Berger, Art Center Sarasota’s executive director, explains that, each week campers experiment with a multitude of art mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, collage and more designed around a central theme. Themes apply to both camps with unique and independent projects done in each one. “Campers practice artmaking skills that expand and challenge the skills they already have in a safe, encouraging and fun environment surrounded by artwork that is in the center’s four galleries,” says Berger. She adds that they learn and hone art skills and color mixing, how to paint with artist paintbrushes, and draw with artist-quality pencils, markers, pastels and more.

“These camps empower young people to create art that’s uniquely their own,” says Berger. “When the week is done, friends and family get to see their creations at a gallery reception. The exposure and positive feedback is a big boost to their artistic self-confidence.” Berger adds that the teachers are all professional art instructors.

Art Center Sarasota is also offering a boot camp for young fashion and costume designers.

“Due to the overwhelming success of our annual ‘iconcept’ show, we’re announcing a special event in September created just for young, emerging designers,” says Berger. Iconcept jr., “Rebels of the Runway,” scheduled for September 25, 2016, will be a runway fashion event showcasing outfits made from unconventional materials created by youth ages 8 to 18.

To prepare for this show, Berger explains that Art Center Sarasota is offering an iconcept jr. Boot Camp. “This camp is for anyone would like try their hand at making apparel from unconventional materials and possibly enter the ‘iconcept jr.’ show,” says Berger. She explains that Barbara Gerdeman, Ray Peper, and other “iconcept” designers will mentor the campers. The two sessions of this special camp are July 25, 26, 29 and August 8, 9, 12. The fee is $115 per week with limited supplies included. Scholarships are available based on financial need. For more information on participation in iconcept jr., or to register, call 941-365-2032 or visit www.artsarasota.org/iconceptjunior.

About Art Center Sarasota

Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949. Art Center Sarasota is now a membership-based organization that offers curated and juried exhibitions, adult and youth education programs, outreach initiatives for underserved youth, and culturally related public programming. Art Center Sarasota’s mission is to provide Sarasota with opportunities for creative expression and art appreciation through art education, exhibitions and cultural programs. www.artsarasota.org.
