Geneva, Ill.—Stryker Trahan collected three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Kane County Cougars to an 8-5 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Saturday night. The Kane County win snapped the Dragons three-game winning streak.
The Dragons lost a game in the playoff race to both Lansing and Bowling Green, dropping them to three games behind the first place Lugnuts and one game behind the Hot Rods for the wildcard race with 14 games to play in the first half season.
Kane County collected five consecutive singles with one out in the bottom of the first inning to score four runs and take a 4-0 lead. The Dragons battled back but could never even the score.
Dayton scored three runs in the third. Ronald Bueno was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to third on Luis Gonzalez’s hit-and-run single. Brian O’Grady grounded to first base, but the throw home by Kane County’s Marty Herum was off target and Bueno slid in safely to make it 4-1. Gonzalez scored on Gavin LaValley’s infield ground out, and Paul Kronenfeld followed with a two-out single to bring in O’Grady and make it 4-3.
But Kane County answered with one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to rebuild the lead to 7-3. Trahan’s two-out, two-run double in the fifth was the key hit. Kane County added another run in the seventh and took an 8-3 lead to the ninth.
The Dragons rallied in the top of the ninth inning and got the tying run to the plate with two outs. Jimmy Pickens singled with one out and Bueno added a two-out single. Gonzalez followed with a run-scoring single, his third hit of the game, and O’Grady’s base hit brought in Bueno to make it 8-5 with runners at first and third. But Avain Rachal grounded out to shortstop to end the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Tejay Antone (3-5) worked the first five innings, allowing 10 hits and seven runs (six earned) with two walks and one strikeout to suffer the loss.
The Dragons 10-hit attack was led by Bueno, who was on base four times and went 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Gonzalez also had three hits. LaValley went 1 for 3 to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games.
The Dragons (30-26) battle the Cougars (28-28) in the second game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (EDT). Seth Varner (5-3, 3.27) will start for the Dragons. Touki Toussaint (0-2, 3.00) will start for Kane County.
The Dragons next home game is Wednesday, June 10 when they host the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Fifth Third Field.
