Stratford Festival adds four performances of Christina, The Girl King to meet demand

August 21, 2014… Due to popular demand, four more performances of Linda Gaboriau’s brilliant new translation of Michel Marc Bouchard’s Christina, The Girl King have been added to the 2014 schedule. With every performance virtually sold out, the Vanessa Porteous-directed production will run for an additional week in September.

“There has been great buzz surrounding Christina, The Girl King since we first announced it as part of our season last August,” says Executive Director Anita Gaffney. “It is a project that has been eagerly anticipated since we commissioned the translation back in 2010. As a result, most of the performances were sold out before it premièred to excellent reviews last week. We are delighted to be able to open up additional opportunities for our audiences to be amongst the first to catch this sensational production.”

In her Festival debut, Jenny Young stars as Sweden’s Queen Christina in what The Globe and Mail’s J. Kelly Nestruck calls a performance “with real panache.” Capital Critics Circle’s Jamie Portman echoes this sentiment by saying: “Whenever Jenny Young is on stage, you can’t take your eyes off her. She is a commanding presence, both physically and intellectually.” Notes the Toronto Star’s Richard Ouzounian: “One couldn’t ask for a smarter, more elegant production.”

Tickets for the following newly added performances go on sale to Members on Thursday, August 21, and to the general public on Friday, August 22:

  • Tuesday, September 23, at 8 p.m.
